Some of us were not comfortable playing against Pakistan, and we did not see any compelling reason to move forward and participate in the game.” He insisted that for him, the nation comes first: “My country means everything to me, and nothing is above the nation.” These comments make it clear that the boycott stems from the collective conscience of the players, many of which were emotionally affected by the Pahgam attack and realized that playing could send the wrong message.
Dhawan’s attitude was echoed by other senior Indian players, who collectively decided that, under current circumstances, Pakistan did not align with its values or public spirit to participate in a match. This integrated front of the Indian legends inspired the organizers to respect their decision, despite the disappointment among fans and a backlash from some quarters of the cricket community.
