Shai Hope achieves amazing ODI record which till now was held by only one Indian player

West Indies batsman Shai Hope has broken several records with his extensive form and supreme class at Napier’s McLean Park. He has not only crossed the 6000-run mark in ODI cricket but has also created history as a West Indian with his unique record.

West Indies has left for New Zealand for the white ball tour. They recently finished the T20I series and now the one-day matches are underway. In the first match of the ODI series, the West Indies captain tried to lead from the front with a breathtaking innings.

Despite a strong performance from Shai Hope, New Zealand’s batsmen successfully chased down the target of 248 runs in less than 34 overs with 3 balls to spare in a rain-affected match. However, the outcome of the game does not diminish the amazingness displayed by the West Indies captain.

Shai Hope has joined the list of top batsmen in world cricket with a unique record

Shai Hope has slowly and very quietly emerged as West Indies’ modern ODI great. He became the first West Indian batsman to score an international century against all Test playing nations.

ODI centuries against all Test playing nations:

Sachin Tendulkar
Hashim Amla
Shai Hope*

Although West Indies have not had much success across formats of late, Hope has scored 11 ODI centuries in his last 75 innings this decade. He is followed by Babar Azam, who has nine centuries to his name, and Quinton de Kock, Virat Kohli, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Shubman Gill, who has eight centuries to his name.

This is Hope’s 19th overall ODI century, as he becomes the fifth fastest player to achieve the feat in terms of innings. Earlier, Babar Azam (102), Hashim Amla (104), Virat Kohli (124) and David Warner (139) were all in the list.

Shai Hope left Brian Lara behind as he completed his century against New Zealand

Shai Hope is currently the captain of the West Indies ODI team and scored his sixth overall century in the longer format of white ball cricket. With this century he registered his name in the West Indian record book.

He overtook Brian Lara to score most centuries by any West Indies captain. Despite being one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Lara played 125 ODI matches as captain for the Windies and could only score 5 centuries in this entire phase.

Hope already has 6 centuries to his name and he has left them behind. He also joined Lara in the list of highest century scorers for West Indies. He is not only behind Chris Gayle (25) but is currently jointly on top with the former West Indies legend.

Ricky Ponting tops the list of most centuries with 22 centuries, while Virat Kohli is behind him in the list with 21 centuries in 230 and 95 ODI matches respectively.

Apart from this, only former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara (23) and South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (32) have more centuries than Hope as a wicketkeeper batsman.

After Vivian Richards in this list is Shai Hope

Shai Hope crossed the 6000-run mark in the longer white-ball format and reached the mark in 142 innings, just one more than country’s great Sir Vivian Richards.

He is currently tied at second place in the list along with Quinton de Kock and has overtaken former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and AB de Villiers, who achieved the feat within 47 ODI innings.

Hope’s century was completed in just 66 balls when he hit a sky-high six off Kyle Jamieson. The batsman scored a total of 109 runs in just 69 balls with the help of 13 fours and four sixes in his innings.
