Big Bash League 2025-26: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi found himself at the center of a major controversy during the BBL 2025-26 clash between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Saturday, December 27.

In fact, in the 13th match of the current season of Big Bash League, Pakistan’s star fast bowler left the field after the 14th over of Adelaide Strikers.

Shaheen was seen limping and holding his knee, suggesting he suffered the injury while attempting to take a catch at mid-on in the BBL match at the Gabba. While bowling to Matthew Short, the Pakistani fast bowler bowled a slower short ball, which resulted in a mis-shot that landed right in front of him as he turned to his right and possibly injured his knee.

The controversy started during the Strikers’ chase of 180 at the Gabba. Shaheen Afridi was attacked strongly by Harry Manenti in the 12th over of the innings.

19 runs were scored in the over, in which Manenti hit four fours against Afridi and Adelaide took the momentum strongly. That poor over from Afridi put the Brisbane Heat team under severe pressure as they were defending 179 runs against the Adelaide Strikers.

Viral video: Fueling “fraud” allegations

Soon after that costly over, Shaheen walked off the field holding his right knee. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when a video went viral on social media. In the clip, Shaheen is shown walking normally near the boundary, but when he realized that the cameras were coming towards him in the stadium, he suddenly started limping.

Moments later, Afridi was seen pointing at his right knee before walking into the Brisbane Heat dressing room. The footage quickly went viral, leading to allegations that the injury may have been exaggerated or even faked after an expensive spell against the strikers.

Before leaving the field, fans questioned Shaheen Afridi’s body language. Although there has been no official confirmation regarding the severity of the injury, Afridi found himself in a social media storm, raising questions over Afridi’s BBL 2025-26 campaign in Australia.

Shaheen Afridi fails, but Brisbane Heat seal thrilling win

Afridi failed to take a wicket as he conceded 26 runs in his three overs against the Strikers. However, the Pakistani’s poor bowling performance did not prove costly for the Heat as they recorded a thrilling seven-wicket win over the Strokers in the BBL clash on Saturday.

After being asked to bat first at the Gabba, the Heat posted 179/9 on the board against the Strikers thanks to Max Bryant’s explosive innings of 63 off 32 balls with the help of four fours and six sixes. Bryant got good support from Matt Renshaw (33).

For Adelaide Strikers, Luke Wood, Matt Short and Hasan Ali took two wickets each against Brisbane Heat. Defending the target, Heat captain Xavier Bartlett led the attack from the front and took 3 wickets for 26 runs in his 4 overs. Bartlett got good support from Jack Wildermuth and Thomas Balkin, who took two wickets each. Short’s explosive innings of 63 runs off 39 balls went in vain as Head defended nine runs in the final over in a thrilling BBL encounter.
