India national cricket team continued its dominance under Shubman Gill with a crushing innings and 300-run win over Afghanistan national cricket team in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Monday (June 8).

The India vs Afghanistan Test match ended inside three days as the touring team failed miserably to perform well with both bat and ball in New Chandigarh. This big win highlighted India’s growing strength under Gill’s captaincy. However, this match was not part of the WTC 2025-27 cycle.

In the second innings, Washington Sundar shone with four wickets as India’s bowlers swept the match with ease inside three days. This was India’s second biggest win after defeating West Indies in 1958.

As captain, Shubman Gill’s batting reaches another level.

Since taking over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2025, Shubman Gill has become one of the most consistent batsmen in the world. The stylish right-handed batsman has now scored 1,076 runs at an excellent batting average of 82.76 in just nine Test matches as captain.

His average is second only to the great Australian captain Don Bradman among captains who have scored more than 1,000 Test runs. Gill has scored six centuries in just 15 innings as captain, with his highest score being 269 against England.

Gill became the fastest Indian Test captain to complete 1,000 runs in terms of time, reaching the milestone within 351 days of taking charge. He became the second fastest Indian captain to reach this milestone in terms of innings by achieving the feat in just 15 innings.

Series results under the leadership of Shubman Gill

The numbers speak for themselves: nine Tests, five wins, three losses and one draw. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India have already produced impressive results in a variety of conditions. Gill’s biggest statement as captain came during India’s challenging tour of England last year.

He led India to a tightly contested 2–2 draw in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy in his first season as captain. The biggest highlight of the England tour was India’s historic win at Edgbaston, where Gill became the first Asian captain to win a Test match at the famous venue.

In that match, Shubman Gill scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 161 runs in the second innings. Their combined score of 430 became the highest score by an Indian in Test cricket history. The captain finished the series in England with 754 runs.

After this they registered a spectacular 1-0 win in the home series against West Indies. But under Gill’s captaincy, India had to face embarrassment by losing the Test series 0-2 to South Africa at home. However, India made a remarkable comeback with a big innings and 300-run win over Afghanistan.
