Scotland created history by becoming the first Associate nation to score more than 200 runs in the T20 World Cup. Scotland achieved this special feat on February 9 at the prestigious Eden Gardens in Kolkata during the match against Italy, who are making their T20 World Cup 2026 debut.
George Munsey leads Scotland batting masterclass in Kolkata
After being asked to bat first by Italy, Scotland performed brilliantly and posted a mammoth 207/4 on the board in 20 overs thanks to George Munsey’s remarkable innings of 84 runs off 54 balls with the help of 13 massive fours and two sixes at the Eden Gardens.
Apart from Munsey’s brilliant half-century, Michael Jones (37) and Brandon McMullen (41*) also made valuable contributions to help Scotland post a strong score on the board.

At the end of the innings, Michael Leask stole the show with a quickfire 22 not out with two fours and the same number of maximum runs off just 5 balls against Italy in the group match at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Scotland created T20 World Cup history by breaking the 200-run barrier.
With a total of 207/4 against Italy, Scotland became the first Associate team to score over 200 in a T20 World Cup match. Additionally, they also surpassed the previous best score by an Associate team in T20 World Cup history, which was 197 by USA against Canada in 2024.
This strong batting performance took Scotland to the top of the list of highest scores by associate teams in the T20 World Cup. The list also includes Canada’s 194 for 5 against the United States in 2024 and Netherlands’ 193 for 4 against Ireland in 2014.
Scotland’s openers registered the second highest partnership in T20 World Cup history
The strong start played a big role in his record-breaking score. Scotland openers Munsey and Jones made a memorable partnership of 126 runs against Italy. This stand is now the second highest opening partnership by an Associate team in T20 World Cup history.
Oman’s Aaqib Ilyas and Jatinder Singh, whose unbeaten 131-run partnership against Papua New Guinea in 2021, remains the highest ever opening partnership by an Associate team in T20 World Cup history. Scotland sent a strong message to the world with its fearless batting performance.

Scotland took their chances after late entry
Meanwhile, Scotland came into the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 as Bangladesh’s replacement after they decided to travel to India for the tournament. And he has made a strong impact in the tournament so far. Scotland put up a brilliant fight against West Indies in their tournament opener.
They fought till the 19th over but fell 35 runs short of the target of 183 runs against West Indies. However, Scotland came back strongly and defeated Italy by 73 runs in their second T20 World Cup 2026 match as they exacted revenge for their qualifier defeat last year.
Brandon McMullen praises George Munsey and Michael Leask
Brandon McMullen said during the innings break, “It was a brilliant performance from the team there. I thought George Munsey was excellent, Michael Jones went on the back end for us and set up the total and expressed himself. Really happy to walk into the half stage.”
He said, “Michael Leask is our X-factor player and he played a great innings to show what he can do for us.” Speaking about his innings, McMullen said, “I think it’s the World Cup on the greatest stage of our game, so I’m excited to go out there and play and hopefully do well.”
