The much awaited announcement has finally arrived. The Jay Shah-led International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Team India opening batsman Sanju Samson as the Player of the Month for March for his heroics in the 2026 T20 World Cup tournament.
On April 14, the ICC announced through an official announcement that the opening batsman has received the prestigious award. Sanju Samson continued his dominance from the Super 8 stage of the tournament.
ICC honored Sanju Samson’s efforts in T20 World Cup 2026
Coming off a bad spell, the right-handed batsman scored 97*, 89 and 89 against West Indies, England and New Zealand. Samson’s second inning of 89 runs came against the Kiwi team in the final of the tournament.
Sanju Samson described the significance of that award, saying, “Winning the ICC Player of the Month award is an incredible feeling, especially as it has been the most unforgettable phase of my cricket journey. Playing a role in India’s victory in the Men’s T20 World Cup was truly a dream, and it took some time to fully grasp the grandeur of that moment.”
He said, “This is an exciting era for Indian cricket, with immense talent all around. I am grateful for the opportunities I have received, and the trust and support of my teammates and coaching staff, who have allowed me to perform at my best.”
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was also in the race for the award.
Along with Samson, Jasprit Bumrah was also in the race to claim the special award. But in the end, it is Sanju Samson who took home the award without any debate or doubt.
It is worth remembering that the team management had dropped Sanju Samson from the playing combination before the tournament due to his poor form. Ahead of the ICC’s premier tournament, when India were busy in a white-ball series with the New Zealand cricket team, Samson was the team’s regular opening batsman in the T20I series. Samson proved to be a huge flop in the entire bilateral match against the Blackcaps, for which he was dropped from the playing eleven in the initial phase of T20 World Cup 2026.
Samson proved his mettle in T20 World Cup 2026
India relied on Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan for the opening positions. When the tournament started, Abhishek Sharma suffered a rare setback, getting out for a duck three times in a row. Later, the think tank was forced to include Sanju Samson again in the playing eleven as an opening batsman and reshuffle the batting order.
Samson and Sharma formed the opening pair, with Ishan Kishan at number three. Samson missed a century by just three runs against the West Indies on March 1, and then followed it up with a blistering 89 against England at the Wankhede, followed by an impressive 89 in the final against New Zealand.
