Sai Sudarshan enters Virat Kohli’s zone with big IPL achievement

Gujarat Titans batsman B Sai Sudarshan equaled Virat Kohli’s coveted IPL record during his team’s win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Gujarat Titans have now reached the top of the points table after winning five consecutive matches. Even with 16 points, GT has not yet qualified for the playoffs, but is in the top spot to do so. This would mean that Gujarat Titans would have made the playoffs in four of their first five seasons as an IPL franchise.

Sudarshan himself has been an essential part of this change with his consistent runs. Last year, he won the Orange Cap at the end of the season, and he has maintained the same consistency in 2026 as well.

Sai Sudarshan’s half-century gives GT massive win over SRH

The black soil pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was perfect for the fast bowlers, especially those with GT.

Sudarshan faced the difficult conditions well and scored 61 runs in 44 balls, while the top order collapsed. Washington Sundar supported Sudarshan throughout, but the beginning of the innings was very slow. SRH’s fast bowlers, especially Pat Cummins, Prafulla Hinge and Saqib Hussain, kept GT in check.

Washington Sundar completed his half-century in the last over of the innings and gave the GT bowlers 168 runs to defend. This was all they needed.

Mohammed Siraj dismissed Travis Head in the first over and Kagiso Rabada was out three times in the powerplay. With impeccable lines and length, it meant that by the sixth over, SRH had a very long bridge to chase.

Jason Holder equaled Rabada’s tally of three wickets, while Prasidh Krishna took two as SRH’s lower middle order completely collapsed. Rashid Khan took the last wicket and bowled out the visiting team for only 86 runs. GT won by 82 runs, which was more than any of their batsmen had scored.

Sai Sudarshan’s form in IPL 2026

Currently, Sudarshan is second in the Orange Cap table with 501 runs in 12 matches.

During his innings, he became the first batsman to cross the 500-run barrier in IPL 2026. However, in the second innings, Heinrich Klaasen overtook him and got the Orange Cap.

Sai Sudarshan has scored 501 runs at an average of 41.75 and strike rate of 155. He has also scored one century and five half-centuries.

Sai Sudarshan equals Virat Kohli’s record!

During his inning of 61, Sudarshan achieved a feat which he will also achieve in 2024 and 2025 – scoring 500 runs in an IPL season.

He has now joined the elite list of players who have scored 500 or more runs in three or more consecutive seasons. The list is topped by former SRH captain David Warner, who crossed the 500-run mark in 6 consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2020 (he did not play in IPL 2018 due to the ball-tampering ban).
