Ryan Rickelton highlights importance of Rohit Sharma after POTM vs LSG win

In match number 47, Mumbai Indians (MI) are hosting Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The match was between the two bottom-placed teams in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The match was a virtual do or die battle for both sides. After tonight’s loss, LSG’s merit has practically dropped to zero, although not mathematically zero immediately.

Both teams made some changes. Due to Hardik Pandya being unwell, Rohit Sharma, Raj Bawa, Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar came into the team for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the team. Super Giants made two changes, Akshat Raghuvanshi and Josh Inglis came into the team. Sky won the toss and decided to field first.

Nicholas Pooran’s return to form

After being invited to bat first, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis made a good start, but later came back after scoring 13 runs in 5 balls. After this, Nicholas Pooran and Marsh gave their all against the MI bowlers and LSG scored 90/1 in the power play. The bowlers then pulled back slightly from 123/1, leaving LSG at 160/5.

Pooran played a sensational inning of 63 runs off 21 balls and Marsh scored 44 runs off 25 balls; They made a partnership of 93 runs for the second wicket. But after this, a flurry of wickets put a brake on the runs and LSG could only reach the score of 228/5 in the stipulated 20 overs, in which Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh remained unbeaten on 31 and 40 runs respectively.

Rohit and Rickelton win it for MI

While chasing, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton got off to a fast start scoring 71 runs in the power play. They stitched a 143-run partnership and laid the foundation for the five-time winners to chase the target. Rickelton and Rohit both missed their good centuries and were out for 83 and 84 respectively.

Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav kept the runs flowing and remained unbeaten with scores of 23* and the finishing touch by Will Jacques MI kept their playoff hopes alive after this win.

One of Mumbai’s greatest players – Ryan Rickelton on opening with Rohit Sharma

Ryan Rickelton praised Rohit Sharma and shared his experience of opening with the former India captain. Ryan Rickelton also praised Rohit, calling him India’s greatest batsman of all time after winning the Player of the Match.

Ryan Rickelton said, “(On partnering with Rohit) One of Mumbai’s greatest players, one of India’s greatest players. I really enjoy spending time there. We are lucky to get wickets here. Wankhede has been really good.”

“And we are able to coordinate quite well and put the bowlers under pressure at the right time and help each other. Rahul Sanghvi was telling me that my game suits this ground. Coming from Johannesburg to Wanderers where you are getting very similar pace and bounce.”

Ryan Rickelton added, “I couldn’t believe it when he was telling me what this pitch would be like for me. But, yeah, I really enjoy it. It’s got good pace, so you get great value for shots. And the ball really flies here. So I adapted my game around our home venue. Always trying to get better, especially when we travel.”

Ryan Rickelton concluded, “The IPL is ridiculous the way these chases are going these days. As Surya said, I heard him say, if you have a good start it sets the stage. And I think that’s the trend with this team.”
