Sanju Samson’s century against Delhi Capitals in Chepauk brought some life into the struggling Chennai Super Kings (CSK). With the help of Sanju’s unbeaten century, CSK registered its first win in the current season.
Last night, when Sanju Samson was thrashing the Delhi Capitals bowlers from the start of the first innings, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad played an unusual innings with a strike rate below 100. Cricket experts heavily criticized the captain’s slow batting style.
Wasim Jaffer criticizes Ruturaj Gaikwad’s slow batting style
Former Team India opener Wasim Jaffer suggested that Ruturaj Gaikwad should not think about the quantity of runs but instead focus on impact, as modern cricket teams often look for batsmen who can make an impact with their batting.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer observed that Ruturaj Gaikwad may have prevented himself from hitting big hits or taking risks as an opener. The experienced batsman may intend to play long innings. The former batsman asked Gaikwad to take more risks.
Jaffer told about Gaikwad’s batting style
“He is someone who wants to score big. You know, being an opening batsman, I don’t think you need to think about 80 or 100 right from the start. I think you need to give a great start, the kind of start openers want”, said Wasim Jaffer.
“He is not someone who is going to have a 200-plus strike rate. If he is asked to increase his scoring rate, I think he needs to take more risks. He has got the game. He has scored centuries in the IPL. But I think he holds his own [back]” said the 48-year-old former cricketer.
He is a different Kohli than the one we saw at the beginning of his career – Wasim Jaffer
Jaffer compared Ruturaj Gaikwad’s slump to Virat Kohli’s early days. Jaffer said Kohli has changed his batting style to play with more impact instead of playing long innings with less intensity.
“I think he plays with a tunnel approach to score big. We have seen [Virat] Kohli should do this: change his game. He is different from the Kohli we saw at the beginning of his career. I am sure Ruturaj can do it [but] he needs to impress [first]Jafar said, don’t think about the pile of runs.
Aaron Finch also expressed disappointment after seeing the slow batting of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Gaikwad scored only 15 runs in 18 balls and lost his wicket to Axar Patel. Former Australian opener Aaron Finch said that Gaikwad is neither playing the role of anchor properly nor playing impressive innings for Chennai Super Kings this season.
“It’s fine to have a player like Shubhman Gill in your team, if he is batting with someone who is a bit of a cowboy at the other end, someone who is scoring 200-plus runs. If he gets 60s and 70s and sets up the middle order or bats with a middle order where he can take control, if needed, he moves off strike and gets someone on strike who can really take them on… but he “He’s not getting the flyers and not getting enough big scores to make a significant impact on games,” Aaron Finch said.
