Former Indian Maestro Sunil Gavaskar has said that the availability of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for Australia is inspired by the agenda that they are the same protests against which India lost in the 2023 World Cup final.

India will visit Australia for an ODI series of three matches from October 19, and then there will be a 5-match T20I series, which is expected to begin on 29 October. The series marks the preparation of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2027 in South Africa, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are named in the squad by BCCI chief selector Ajit Aggarkar.

Sunil Gavaskar noted Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s agenda behind ODI availability

Sunil Gavaskar strongly admitted that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made themselves available as it was a series against Australia. Australian was the only protest against which India lost in the previous edition of the 2023 World Cup.

He further said that the series was against the choice of Mino like West Indies or Zimbabwe, then both would not have made themselves available, and the gap will continue.

“I am sure that if it was a visit to Zimbabwe or West Indies, both of them would not have been available. But because it is in Australia, and because India lost to Australia in the World Cup final, perhaps that is why both have decided, yes, I want to be available for it,” he told today.

“It depends largely on the number of one day matches that India plays,” Gavaskar cited the World Cup selection norm for RO-C.

Even the Indian batting legend admitted that the road to choose for the World Cup would actually be very difficult for both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This is because they have retired from the other two formats of the game, and their selection depends largely on the time of the game.

He said, “It depends to a large extent on the number of one day matches that India plays in the next few years. See, it is not easy to play only seven or eight ODIs in a season when something big as a World Cup,” he said.

He said, “For the matches of those eight white balls, possibly five T20s and three ODIs. It is not giving much more in terms of exposure or practice for players who are coming in the later stages of their career,” he further said.

Sunil Gavaskar also asked Indian legends to play in the Vijay-Xare Trophy

Alighting the views of Indian chief selector Ajit Aggarkar, Sunil Gavaskar also emphasized the need for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, so that they could make themselves available for the upcoming version of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This will be necessary to keep their World Cup dreams alive as there is a very limited international program in the 50 -over format in India.

He said, “Whenever it is determined, he will have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy in India if it does not confront with any international ODI tournament. It is a way to stay in the trim and maintain match practice,” he said.
