Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are being asked to play domestic cricket to secure a spot for the ODI World Cup 2027. Finch said the domestic matches would have no impact on his chances, as his selection would depend on his commitment, desire and performance.

Team India will face Australia in the three-match ODI series starting from Sunday, October 19 in Perth. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to the Men in Blue after a seven-month break from international cricket. Young opening batsman Shubman Gill will lead the Indian cricket team in the 50-over format for the first time.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are currently active only in ODIs.

Since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are currently active only in ODIs, there was speculation that the senior pair could join the India ‘A’ squad for the unofficial three-match series against Australia ‘A’. However, he was not included in the team.

Neither player has participated in competitive cricket since the conclusion of IPL 2025. His long break has raised questions about his readiness upon returning to international action.

Some experts and fans believe that experienced batsmen should play domestic cricket to maintain rhythm and match preparation. Reports indicate that the selectors may ask him to take part in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy as preparation ahead of the home ODI series against New Zealand in early 2026.

Don’t think it’ll change his chances – Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s participation in the World Cup should not affect playing domestic cricket. Speaking to Hindustan Times before the first ODI, Finch said that only a few home matches can help him prepare for the match.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to play that much domestic cricket. I don’t think it will change their chances or their approach in any way. The odd game here or there, just to make sure they are acclimatised to a competitive environment,” said Finch, the GeoStar expert.

He added, “But you know they’re going to hit thousands and thousands of balls behind the scenes, away from the cameras. So, yes, if the desire is still there, and if the performance is there, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t do it.”

Would love to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch said that he would like to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI World Cup. He stressed that his selection will depend on his performance, the team management’s decision and his own commitment.

“I would love to see both of them playing in the 50-over World Cup in 2027. It will depend on the selectors, the coaching staff, the captain and their performance. It all depends on that.”

“I think whenever you have the experience that they bring, but you also have the next generation of players leading the way, it’s really exciting because it keeps the depth of the team so strong. And there’s no doubt that India have that,” Finch said.
