Chief selector Ajit Aggarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have taken several important decisions before the upcoming White-Ball Tour against Australia. According to reports, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can become ‘former players’ with their future for the remaining indefinite ICC ODI World Cup.
Virat and Rohit have been included in India’s 15 -member squad for the ODI series in Australia, which starts from October 19. The chairman of the BCCI of the selectors said that he is not in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup. In particular, Rohit was removed as India’s ODI captain, in which Shubman Gill was taking charge of the team.

According to The Telegraph, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can become “former players”. Already, after moving away from T20is and tests, the pair faces a difficult task in competing with the physical demands of regular cricket.
Ajit Agkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir planned to hand over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill after his impressive success in England.
“The plan to put Shubman Gill in the charge of the ODI side was prepared long ago, and the success of the new test captain in England helped only the cause of the selectors and team management. The blueprint prepared by Ajit Agkar and Gautam Gamahir was kept a close secret and got the approval of the power houses in the board.”
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma may face challenges
Sachin Tendulkar retired from international cricket in 40, while MS Dhoni played his last match for India at the age of 39. Rohit Sharma will be 40 years old, and Virat Kohli around 39, when 2027 World Cup takes place in Africa.
Waiting for the opportunities of many young players, the senior pair may face challenges in maintaining their spots. Recent reports suggested that the Australia series may serve as a farewell series for both Rohit and Kohli.

Rohit Sharma converted Virat Kohli into a full -time ODI captain in 2021
Rohit Sharma officially converted Kohli into permanent ODI captain in December 2021. Before becoming a full -time leader, he had already guided the title during the 2018 Asia Cup. He led India on the 2017 tour of Sri Lanka when Kohli was rested.
The 38 -year -old led the team to win an Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in 2023. The team dominated the World Cup at home, unbeaten in the finals before the heart broke against Australia.
However, two years later, under his leadership, India lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy, including them among the most successful modern-day white ball captains.
Rohit captained India in 56 ODIs between 2017 and 2025, with 42 wins, 12 necklaces, with a tie, and not a result. With a winning percentage of 75, 38 -year -old is the best captain in India’s ODI history in terms of figures.
