The Gautam Gambhir-led Indian team management is reportedly discussing a rotation policy for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul as part of their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
According to a Times of India report published on Tuesday, July 14, the management and selectors are attempting to convince the senior trio to rest them from time to time during the bilateral ODI series to create opportunities for the younger players while managing the workload. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has confirmed Virat Kohli’s role in finalizing India’s 2027 World Cup squad.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah will play ODI together after 968 days
India’s upcoming opening ODI against England will also see the return of one of the team’s most experienced combinations. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are set to play together in an ODI for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.
Bumrah has not played a 50-over international match since that defeat in Ahmedabad. During his absence, India have played 26 ODIs, their first appearance in the format after a gap of 968 days.
The return of the senior trio gives India a settled core to begin their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit Sharma has traditionally enjoyed batting in England, scoring seven ODI centuries in the country at an average of 64.90. His record is even better at Edgbaston, where he averages 89.40. Virat Kohli has returned after losing the last series against Afghanistan but has come with excellent form behind him. The former India captain has recorded six fifty-plus scores in his last seven ODI innings and has also enjoyed another productive IPL season.
Apart from strengthening India’s batting, the England series also provided several individual achievements for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Rohit is just 280 runs away from completing 12,000 ODI runs and needs a century to become the first Indian opener to score an ODI century at the age of 39. Another century will also make him the Indian opener with the most ODI centuries. He needs just one six to become the Indian batsman with the most number of international sixes against England.
Virat Kohli is equally close to many major destinations. The former India captain needs 203 runs to become the fastest batsman to reach 15,000 ODI runs. He is just nine runs away from becoming the leading run-scorer for India across all international formats in England and needs 150 more runs to become the leading ODI run-scorer for India against England.
India planning rotation policy for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli ahead of 2027 World Cup: Report
India’s team management under head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly working on a rotation policy for senior players – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul – as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup begin.
According to Times of India, there have been discussions between the team management, selectors and senior players about giving periodic rest to experienced cricketers during bilateral ODI series. The aim is to provide more opportunities to young players while ensuring that India have adequate backup options ahead of the World Cup.
The report added that the management had also considered resting Rohit Sharma for the third ODI against Afghanistan last month to accommodate Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. Instead, captain Shubman Gill moved to No. 3, giving Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal the opportunity to open together. Despite scoring two centuries in his last three ODI innings, Jaiswal was not included in the squad for the England series.
The report adds that the management would like Rohit to make a strong impact early in the ODI series against England rather than end up with a big score in the final game.
The rotation plan is not limited to Rohit Sharma only. With Virat Kohli returning to the ODI side and KL Rahul continuing to be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper, the management is also looking to develop suitable backup options for the duo.
“The team management does not want a situation where a senior player is out of form and there is no one ready with adequate game time. The issue is that Rohit, Kohli and Rahul do not play much in international white-ball cricket apart from ODIs. Rohit may get a full opportunity in England. If his form dips here, he may not get that run in the next series,” a source told The Times of India.
The report also said that convincing senior players to sit out selected ODIs could be one of the management’s biggest challenges, as they no longer feature regularly in other white-ball formats.
Does India need a rotation policy for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli?
India’s reported rotation plans make sense from a team-building perspective, but there is also a strong case for retaining as many experienced players together as possible ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The World Cup will be played in South Africa where conditions are expected to provide additional pace and bounce. These are situations in which experienced batsmen generally have even more importance. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have shown time and again throughout their careers that they can handle high quality pace attack and short-pitched bowling in challenging overseas conditions.
Recent results also show that India’s young batting group is still developing its ability to handle sustained pressure. The T20I series defeats against Ireland and England highlighted that the next generation remains talented but has yet to establish the necessary consistency at the highest level.
This does not mean that India should ignore succession planning. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and other emerging batsmen need a chance before the World Cup. However, these opportunities should come without undue scrutiny on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli whenever they play.
