Former Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma could not stop himself from captaining the side during the second ODI of the three-match series against the Australian national cricket team.
India faced Australia in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval and lost by 2 wickets, allowing the Mitchell Marsh-led side to win the series with one match to spare.
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy instincts have taken over in Adelaide
Before the Australia tour, Shubman Gill was made India’s ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar justified the move in the press conference, saying that he wanted to give Shubman Gill some time to settle into the role before the 2027 World Cup.
Shubman Gill started his ODI captaincy career with a crushing defeat to Australia in Perth and his team’s performance did not improve in the second match too.
Batting first, Rohit Sharma scored 73 runs off 97 balls, before Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli failed miserably. Shreyas Iyer also played a good inning of 61 runs, while Axar Patel played an inning of 44 runs as India posted 264/9 on the board.
The Indian bowlers did a good job initially, defending the total, but the inexperienced Australian batsmen played positive cricket and took the match away from India.
During the bowling innings, Rohit Sharma performed some leadership duties despite not being in that role. He was seen guiding the bowlers and interacting with Shubman Gill and some clips of those moments went viral on social media.
In a video, Rohit Sharma was seen lecturing Washington Sundar on improving his line and length while bowling to Cooper Connolly after the 33rd over, and Gill was seen busy in the background preparing the field for the next over.
Furthermore, before the start of the 47th over, which was the last over, Rohit Sharma was seen explaining the plan to Arshdeep Singh, with Shubman Gill standing beside him.
Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron, after watching Rohit’s action, said in the commentary, “From off-spinner to left-handed batsman, it is important to take the ball away from the batsman and bowl a little slower. Usually the captain comes and tells the bowlers what to do….”

Felt good to beat India – Adam Zampa
Australia’s leading leg spinner Adam Zampa bounced back with bowling figures of 4/60 against India in Adelaide and was awarded the Player of the Match award.
Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Adam Zampa expressed his happiness over the series win against India. He elaborated:
“It’s good to beat India. It’s always been a good battle against them, especially in ODI cricket. Even in India, we’ve always tested them and they’ve tested us a lot of times when they come here. Two teams who have really adapted to the conditions well. They’re the best team in the world. They’ve been doing that for quite some time now. So, it’s great to test ourselves against them.”
“They guys (Pacers) have been owners of the powerplay for a long time. So, I’ve been very grateful and fortunate. And then you have guys like Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis coming in, who are working their way through the middle. It makes my job a lot easier through the middle. The beauty of Mitch (Marsh) is that he is cool, relaxed, never emotional. We run our own show with the ball. Are.”
