Rohit Sharma, who was named in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad a few days ago, opened the innings in the aggressive style that has been on display during the 2023 ODI World Cup and put the opposition bowlers under pressure.

He was serious against the bad balls and made full use of them by sending them across the boundary line, taking the pressure off Angkrish Ranghubanshi, who opened the batting with Rohit and provided good support to him with 38 runs off 58 balls.

Raghuvanshi holding one end allowed Rohit to continue his aggressive play, reducing Mumbai’s already limited reach.

This was Rohit’s 37th century in List A cricket, adding to the 33 centuries the right-handed batsman has scored so far in ODI cricket.

The former Indian captain also holds the record for the highest individual score of 264 in ODI cricket against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2014, a match which India eventually won easily.

Interestingly, the above score is also the third highest individual score in the history of List A cricket.

Rohit Sharma, who returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after a long time, continued where he left off in India’s last ODI against South Africa as he scored a half-century in the series opener and followed it up with another half-century in the final game.

Rohit was involved in a few century partnerships in the respective games, which proved crucial in the end, as India won both the games.

The only batsman to score three double centuries in ODI cricket, he added 161 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli in the first match and 155 runs for the opening wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the decider in Visakhapatnam.

What was most special in both the innings was the different style of play adopted by Rohit, in the first game he was cautious in the beginning and adopted an aggressive approach in the second.

Preparation

Rohit will now take part in India’s next ODI match against New Zealand on home ground starting from January 11.

The right-handed batsman would like to deliver a similar performance in that particular series to keep in good shape for the upcoming matches, including the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League starting in March.
