Rohit Sharma’s dream of playing in the ICC World Cup 2026 is alive, but his place in the Indian team is not confirmed at the moment. Rohit Sharma has made it clear that he wants to end his career with the ODI World Cup trophy, but the path is full of challenges and uncertainties.
As discussions continue behind the scenes about India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, latest reports suggest that the team management and selectors are not yet looking at Rohit as a guaranteed part of their long-term plans for the tournament.

Rohit Sharma’s ICC World Cup 2027 dream faces a tough challenge
Rohit Sharma has already retired from Test and T20 cricket and is playing only ODIs for India. Nevertheless, the former Indian captain is highly motivated and determined to continue his career with the aim of participating in the ICC World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
However, the BCCI and the Indian selection committee are reportedly taking a cautious approach. The preparations and planning for the ODI World Cup have already started, but there are no assurances for any senior players including Rohit and Virat Kohli.
They are giving priority to performance, fitness levels and consistency rather than reputation or past achievements. However, the 39-year-old recently reminded everyone of his class when he played a blistering inning of 79 runs against Afghanistan in Chennai. The knock helped quell some of the criticism.

England tour could be important for Rohit’s World Cup dream
Rohit’s next major assignment is the upcoming three-match ODI series in England, where each innings can play a vital role in convincing the selectors and the team management that the experienced opener still has the fire.
By the time the 2027 World Cup starts, Rohit will be around 40 years old. That age factor has sparked discussion about whether he can maintain the fitness and form required to compete at the highest level for another year.
Rohit Sharma not in Gautam Gambhir, Ajit Agarkar’s World Cup plans?
Now, a latest report suggests that Rohit Sharma’s World Cup dream will largely depend on his performance and fitness in the next one and a half years.
Senior journalist Abhishek Tripathi shared that the Indian selection committee and team management are closely monitoring Rohit’s performance before taking any long-term decisions. But Rohit Sharma’s dominance still continues in the ICC ODI rankings.
He revealed that Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his team, as well as head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management, are not currently considering Rohit Sharma for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Sanjay Manjrekar questions Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans
Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar believes that the Indian selectors need to be clear about Rohit’s future. He believes that if Rohit is being selected, it should be because he is actually part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former Indian batsman also said that the selection decision should not be influenced by a player’s reputation, seniority or position in the team.
The Times of India quoted Manjrekar as saying, “If the selectors have picked Rohit, I hope it’s because they genuinely see him as part of the 2027 World Cup plans. We all know the culture around big-name players. The decision is rarely as simple as one based on cricketing merit.”
It seems the same is true with Rohit also. If the selectors believe that Rohit is part of the long-term plan then they should say so. But if he is being picked because they are not prepared to replace him, then it reflects a problem that has persisted in Indian cricket for years. Selection should never be about what is best for Virat, Rohit or Bumrah. It should always be about what is best for Indian cricket.”
