Rohit and Virat Kohli made a great end for their T20i career as they finished it by winning the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2024. However, he cannot be said about his test retirement, as he experienced an extended lean patch with the bat. Rohit Sharma announced his test retirement on 7 May 2025, and a few days later, on May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli declared his test retirement.

Rohit and Kohli were last seen in action in international cricket for the Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The pair played very well in the competition and helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Meanwhile, according to a report at PTI, he is set to make his comeback in international cricket in the upcoming ODI series against the Australia National Cricket Team.

The Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee will be available on Saturday, October 4 to select ODI and T20I squads for Australia Tour. He is ready to name Rohit and Kohli in the OD squad amidst rapid speculation on his future in Indian cricket.

The report at PTI states, “The selectors are likely to sit for the third day of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad on Saturday, Ahmedabad.

Recently, Kohli and Rohit returned to training and have worked hard in the gym and net to prepare themselves for the tour of Australia after being away from competitive cricket. Rohit Sharma should not be dismissed !!

Earlier, some reports suggested that Rohit’s captaincy was in danger, with the control board for cricket in India to handle the ODI team’s Shubman Gill to handle the reins.

However, the PTI report claimed that BCCI is not in the mood to dismiss Rohit Sharma as he is consistently performing well with the bat, and the team is also doing well under his leadership.

The report said, “There is no reason to remove Rohit from the leadership role as he has hardly found any failure in this format until he wants to focus on his batting himself.”

In particular, Rohit has shed a lot of weight and maximized his fitness level with a look at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be played in African countries. It will be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are considered for the next 50 over World Cup. However, currently, BCCI is not worried about it and is focusing on the T20 World Cup 2026.

“Priority is currently at home with the T20 World Cup early next year, and in 2025, four home tests score the maximum WTC points,” the report said the report.
