South African legend Jonty Rhodes recently shared his views on India captain Rohit Sharma and his approach towards the game. The former cricketer said that Rohit has the potential to achieve consistent success at the highest level and added that his qualities have helped him carve out a remarkable international career.

Team India started the series with a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. However, Rohit had a disappointing performance in the opening match, scoring 16 runs off 16 balls before being run out after a scuffle with captain Shubman Gill.

Jonty Rhodes said that working with Rohit Sharma as the fielding coach of Mumbai Indians from 2009 to 2017 was a memorable experience. Rhodes said the former India captain prefers to understand the conditions in between rather than spending long hours on intense training sessions.

During a conversation on Prakhar Gupta’s YouTube channel, he said, “I keep telling journalists that I have the best job in the world. I got a chance to watch Rohit Sharma practice. He would rather walk in between a big workout session and feel it. He makes it look very easy. He is not born with superior talent, but there is consistency in the approach, he has always been like that.”

Jonty Rhodes highlighted the spontaneous and genuine personality of Rohit Sharma. Rhodes said that Rohit has remained true to himself throughout his career and believes that his success as a leader comes from not trying to imitate former captains like MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli.
He said, “His leadership style has been the same. He is really very funny. He has some of the best voices on the stump mic and he challenges his teammates tough. His personality has always been there. It goes back to that. You don’t have to be MS Dhoni or Virat. You just have to be yourself. They are all very different, all three are successful because they have consistency.”

Rohit has made a great record as a captain. He has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles and led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, making him one of the most successful captains in modern cricket.
Jonty Rhodes compared Rohit and KL Rahul
Jonty Rhodes also compared Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to make batting easier. Rhodes said that Rahul appears to be the more natural athlete, but Rohit’s timing and ability to hit shots make him one of the most enjoyable batsmen to watch.
“Rohit is a bit like KL Rahul. It sounds very simple. But compared to KL, Rohit is not a great looking athlete. But when he hits the ball with effortless timing, it is mesmerizing when you watch him bat.”
Although Rohit scored only 16 runs against Afghanistan He nevertheless reached a major milestone, before being run out following a mix-up of Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan. The Indian captain crossed the 16,000 international run mark as an opening batsman in 359 matches.
