Rohit Sharma’s injury during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) has disappointed the Indian selectors and the BCCI because of the way they have handled the situation.
As India starts planning for the ICC World Cup 2027, the selectors and team management are worried about whether Rohit Sharma will be able to keep his body fit and fresh for the next long cycle.

BCCI angry over Rohit Sharma’s injury handling in IPL 2026
Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 12. He appeared to be in pain while batting and had to retire hurt. After that match, Rohit missed five consecutive matches for MI due to a hamstring injury.

The former Indian captain returned to action against Lucknow Supergiants on May 4, but during those three weeks away from action during the ongoing IPL 2026, one more thing reportedly disappointed the BCCI.

A report in Times of India states that Rohit did not report to the BCCI Center of Excellence during his recovery period and this has raised concerns inside the Indian setup.
‘Rohit Sharma did not report to BCCI’s COE
Rohit has now slimmed down and is working hard on his fitness, but the management still feels that ODI cricket is extremely demanding physically, especially for a player approaching 40, and the selectors are not entirely sure whether his body can handle that workload until the ICC World Cup 2027.
A BCCI source said, “Rohit did not report to the BCCI Center of Excellence (CoE) for those three weeks. He has slimmed down, but there are concerns that his body will not be able to take the load of a high-performance game. He will have to field 50 overs. There is no substitute for an impact player in ODI cricket like IPL. When you are close to 40, the body takes time to recover.”
There is another big concern. Actually, the Indian cricket team does not have too many ODI matches before the 2027 World Cup, so the selectors have very little time to test the new opening combination.

India is already preparing backup opening plans
Because of this, the Indian team management has already started thinking about the backup plan. Yashasvi Jaiswal is being seen as an important opening batsman of the future, while Ishan Kishan is also being seen as a backup option who can open the innings and also take wickets if needed.
The source shared, “There are not many ODI matches before the World Cup. Anyway, Jaiswal has not got enough game time. Ishan has been selected so that he can serve as an opener. But if Rohit Sharma fails to make it to the World Cup and Shubman Gill or Jaiswal gets injured, then another opener needs to be ready.”
It is noteworthy that during the current IPL 2026, Rohit has so far scored 283 runs in 8 matches for Mumbai Indians at a strike rate of 160.79 and an average of 40.42. The team management will keep a close eye on him during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
