Consecutive defeats in Tests, many controversial moments off the field became a burden not only for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, but also for England men’s national cricket team managing director Rob Key.

As the team was constantly in the headlines, mostly for unwanted reasons, Key’s position at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also became uncertain. Dropping Brendon McCullum was a desperate move by the team management to restore the team’s performance in the red-ball format.

Rob Key saved his job by removing Brendon McCullum from the position of head coach of the Test team.

With Brendon McCullum removed as the head coach of the Test team, it seems that Rob Key has secured his job at the ECB for the time being as ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould has backed him after the head coach was snubbed.

The Test series defeat against New Zealand and the subsequent sudden retirement of Ben Stokes led to speculation about Key’s future. Praising Rob Key during the third day of the women’s Test between England and India, Richard Gould said that he is valuable to the England Cricket Board.

“He’s got a really good mind. He’s a good communicator. He’s got extraordinary knowledge of what’s going on within our game in England. And he’s spent the last four years in one of the toughest jobs in the English game. And the experience that not only he’s gained, but other people within the team as well, has been really valuable to us,” Gould said.

When will the ECB announce the name of the captain and head coach of the Test team?

The England Test team is now in a unique situation as the team currently has neither a captain nor a head coach. With several Test series scheduled in the year, the ECB will have to appoint new names for both the important positions. Gould said the board should make appointments in a timely manner.

He said, “None of us is immune from consequences, be it a coach, a captain, a director of cricket or a chief executive. None of us is immune from consequences. The key thing is to ensure that whatever changes we make are the ones that bring the quickest solution to the results we want.”

Although the team’s performance in Tests is questionable, Gould is confident of the country’s talent. He is confident of re-establishing the team on the back of emerging talent from the County Championship.

He mentioned that in both men’s and women’s cricket, England played quite well, as the men’s cricket team reached the semi-finals in the ICC competition and the women’s team played the final in the recent Women’s T20 World Cup.

The ECB Chief Executive expressed, “We don’t have a broken system in English cricket. We have an amazing talent coming through the counties. We have fantastic crowds, fantastic facilities. The backroom is in an exceptional position in terms of science and medical data in both the men’s and women’s game.”

“We’ve been to the semi-finals of the most recent men’s ICC tournament, the final of the most recent women’s tournament. So it’s not about babies and bath-waters; it’s about finding the exact areas where we can improve fastest,” he said.
