Team India captain and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s stump-mic instructions caught the attention on the second day of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati (Sunday, November 23). Pant urged his bowler to let Senuran Muthusamy “go for it”, moments before the batsman bowled the next ball to long-on.

The wicketkeeper, who was captaining the team in the absence of Shubman Gill, was frustrated as India struggled to take wickets. Muthusamy (109 runs) scored a century and Marco Jansen scored 93 runs in just 91 balls. South Africa scored a total of 489 runs in 151.1 overs before India’s innings ended.

A light-hearted moment occurred during the 124th over of South Africa’s first innings. With one ball left in the over, and Marco Jenson having already taken a run, Pant told Washington Sundar, “Marne de usko,” a clear signal to tempt the batsman into a big shot.

Sundar followed the instruction, delivered a fuller delivery outside off and Senuran Muthusamy accepted the invitation. He came down and hit a six over long-on for a clean slog-sweep, taking South Africa’s total past 350 runs.

Senuran Muthusamy was out after scoring 109 runs on the ball of Mohammad Siraj.

Senuran Muthusamy scored 109 runs off 206 balls, which included 10 fours and two sixes. He showed patience against the Indian bowlers in the morning session. The left-handed batsman made an 88-run partnership with Kyle Verreynne for the seventh wicket.

Muthusamy and Johnson made an important partnership of 97 runs, due to which the trend of the match went in favor of South Africa. South Africa was all out for 489 runs, giving it complete control over the match.

Muthusamy became the third South African batsman to score a Test century while batting at number seven or lower in India, after Quinton de Kock (2019) and Lance Klusener (1997).

His resistance finally ended soon after the lunch break, when Mohammed Siraj dismissed him with his first ball of the season. Muthusamy pulled one over the top which reached Yashasvi Jaiswal at fine leg.

Really special moment in front of this full house – Senuran Muthusamy

After the second day’s play, Senuran Muthusamy said that completing his century in front of a packed crowd was a special moment. He said his main focus was to help South Africa post a strong score in the first innings by building partnerships.

,It was truly a special moment in front of this packed house. I am just happy that I could contribute for the team and get some runs on the board in the first innings, which is always important. “The (plan) was just to build partnerships and try to take the innings forward and then score runs in the middle.” Muthusamy said as quoted by Cricbuzz,

India looked tired after spending 151 overs on the field in two days. The openers came to bat only for a short period before stumps. Yashasvi Jaiswal (7) and KL Rahul (2) added 9 runs in 6.1 overs. India is still behind by 480 runs.
