Rishabh Pant will remain in LSG despite leaving the captaincy: report

Rishabh Pant has resigned from the captaincy role after Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered another setback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In the 2026 season, they finished their campaign at the bottom position in the points table.

The franchise gave this information on May 29. Rishabh Pant Had wanted to play a leadership role and the team management had also accepted it. Since the keeper-batsman is no longer the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, there is speculation about his career with the franchise.

Rishabh Pant resigns from LSG captaincy

Some people have started believing that Rishabh Pant’s journey Lucknow Super Giants It is over. However, there has been no official announcement regarding this. The franchise only informed about his resignation from the responsibility of captaincy.

According to a journalist, the star keeper-batsman is all set to continue with the team in the upcoming season as well. Since Pant is no longer the leader of the team, the franchise will have to choose a new captain before IPL 2026. Mitchell Marsh could be the next captain of LSG, having played some brilliant innings in the 2026 season.

Will Pant leave the franchise?

Journalist Ravish Bisht claimed in his social media post on 11 May, “Rishabh Pant is not going anywhere. He is part of the LSG setup. All reports related to his transfer are false. Mitchell Marsh will be the new captain of LSG.”

LSG brought in Pant for Rs 27 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 season and appointed him as the team leader, replacing KL Rahul. In both the seasons, neither the captain himself nor the team could perform as per their true potential. As a result, for consecutive seasons, Lucknow missed the play-off places.

In the 2025 season, the southpaw scored 269 runs at an average of 24.45 in 13 innings despite registering one century and one half-century. In the following season, Rishabh Pant’s batting average was 28.36 after appearing in 13 innings.

Tom Moody advises ‘reset’

LSG’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, felt that it was the right decision for the 28-year-old to step down from the captaincy role as the team needed to do something important after consecutive failures.

Tom Moody said in his official statement, “The last few years have been difficult for him. He has not been able to reach the heights he had hoped for for himself. This is the right decision – certainly the right decision for him, it is the right decision for the franchise. Hopefully this is the corner he goes to that enables him to play the brand of cricket that we identify with him.”

He had earlier also said that the franchise needs to reset the leadership roles for the betterment of the team. According to ESPN Cricinfo, Rishabh Pant’s future in the team will be decided after reviewing the entire season.

According to the media report, “Regarding Pant’s future at LSG, Moody said that it is an “obvious question”, but its answer will be possible only after reviewing the entire season.”
