Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Match No. Round 5 has come to a close as Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 6 wickets. With this big win, DC has reached the top of the table. Capitals won the toss and decided to field first. Surprising everyone, Rishabh Pant opened for LSG; However, his tenure in the new role was short-lived.
The LSG captain got an unfortunate dismissal at the non-striker’s end when Mitchell Marsh’s straight drive hit the stumps off the hands of Mukesh Kumar while he was outside the crease and returned to the pavilion after scoring 7 runs. After the first wicket, Super Giants never recovered and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
LSG has a lot of work to do
Aiden Markram was the next man out, then wickets continued to fall, as Marsh made 35 before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. Abdul Samad and Shahbaz Ahmed made a short partnership of 33 runs as the former was the leading run-scorer with 36 runs. The latter scored 15 runs and was unlucky not to get much strike and LSG were bowled out for 141.
This 141 runs was his lowest score ever in IPL history. Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan were the best of the bowlers as both the fast bowlers took three wickets each and completely demolished the LSG batting line-up. Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets and Akshar took one wicket.
We didn’t have enough- Rishabh Pant
After the defeat, Rishabh Pant said, “The best way to recover from my dismissal is to ignore it because you can’t control it. The way we batted, we couldn’t build partnerships for long. We had to bring in some players who could be impact players and add some runs because we didn’t have enough runs on a good pitch.”
“We wanted to find the left-rights at the top to stop them from bowling to the left-arm spinners. The new ball was providing enough help. But you can’t put pressure on the opposition with 140. 20 extras hurt, plus, you try too hard on a wicket like this and trying to restrict them inside 140. 50-50 call, but definitely we will see me at the top of the order.”
Sameer Rizvi is a hero for DC
DC, chasing the target, had the worst start as they lost KL Rahul for a golden duck, with Mohammed Shami taking the wicket on the very first ball of the second innings. This is the second time Shami has picked Rahul for a golden duck; Earlier, this happened in 2023 when the fast bowler played for Gujarat Titans.
DC’s batsmen struggled against LSG’s pace bowlers, as the next man to fall was Nitish Rana, and then debutant Pathum Nissanka, who was dismissed for just one run by Prince Yadav. On Prince’s next legal delivery, he lifted the Delhi captain for a golden duck, taking his score to 26/4.
Samir Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs then added 119 runs for the 5th wicket as both the batsmen looked in complete control, playing controlled, aggressive shots to take the innings forward and help DC get over the line and post a total of 142 runs with 17 balls to spare.
Rizvi and Stubbs remained unbeaten with scores of 70 and 39 respectively. The former player was the man of the match for his brilliant innings.
