Australia national cricket team great captain Ricky Ponting has given an absurd verdict on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can represent the India national cricket team in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
Ricky Ponting said getting back their pace and form will be vital for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but only time will tell whether they will be able to play the next 50-over World Cup.
The one thing I don’t like to hear from anyone is ‘I’ve achieved everything in sport’ – Ricky Ponting
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s wonderful comeback in international cricket was ruined by Australia National Cricket Team’s premier fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.
Kohli and Rohit took part in their first international match against the Australian team at the Perth Stadium on Sunday, October 19 after participating in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
After retiring from Test and T20 cricket, Kohli and Rohit have become one-format players and will be seen in action in international cricket for limited periods towards the end of their careers.
Meanwhile, Rohit and Kohli had a forgettable return to cricket as the opener was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for 8, and Mitchell Starc dismissed India’s No. 3 for a duck.
Speaking on the ICC review, Australian great Ricky Ponting said he does not believe one can achieve everything in cricket and believed Virat Kohli would have set some smaller targets for himself on the Australia tour.
Ricky Ponting said, “The one thing I don’t like to hear from anyone is ‘I’ve achieved everything in the game’ because I think you still have to have some short-term goals and not just be trying to get to the 2027 World Cup.”
“Virat has always been a highly motivated guy. And I think he has probably sat down and even given himself some targets and things that he can achieve in this series here in Australia and is not just waiting and wasting time for the next World Cup.”
He will get some very good batting wickets in the next few weeks – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting further said that both Rohit and Virat Kohli have been the best batsmen for India for a long time and only time will tell whether they can feature in the ICC World Cup 2027 or not. He said:
“We know about both of those guys, they are at their best, yes, obviously they are in India’s best team. But can they get back to their best between now and when the World Cup starts?
“And that’s just an answer, as Ravi said, that we’ll find out in a short time. They’ll get some very good batting wickets over the next few weeks in Australia. There aren’t many places better to go and bat in a one-day match than the Adelaide Oval, which is coming up in a few days.”
The biggest thing is to find your rhythm and pace – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting also said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who he feels are the GOATs of ODI cricket, will have a great chance to make a comeback in batting-friendly conditions in the Adelaide ODI against Australia and backed them to play in the next 50-over World Cup if they continue to produce match-winning performances with the bat.
Ricky Ponting said, “Finding your rhythm and pace is the biggest thing. When you take a break, it takes a while for anyone to get back into the rhythm and pace of a 50-over game.”
“I’m hopeful that both of those players will be back soon. As I said, Adelaide is a great place to bat and a great place to play cricket. But it won’t be easy thanks to the fact that they are facing some of the best white-ball bowlers who have ever played the game. So, the challenge is definitely there.
“But I always say this, you never write off champion players. And these two guys have been two of the best, and while I’m on record saying I think Virat is the best 50-over player I’ve ever seen, you don’t write him off. He’ll find a way to contribute for his team and win games, and if he does that, he’ll probably be in the World Cup squad in 2027.”
