Ponting, who led Australia to back-to-back World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007, stressed that a dip in form is natural, especially after a long break from the game. He believes that both the Indian greats need time to regain their rhythm in the 50-over format.
“Finding your rhythm and pace is the biggest thing. When you’ve had a break, it takes a while for anyone to get back into the rhythm and pace of a 50-over game. I’m hopeful that both of those guys will bounce back very quickly.” Ponting said.
Ponting said players like Kohli and Rohit, who have performed consistently on the big stages, should never be ignored after a few low scores.
“They are proven champions. They know how to adapt and how to win games. You can never count out players with that level of experience and hunger,” He added.

Perth conflict is no cause for concern
In the series opener at the Optus Stadium, both batsmen found themselves vulnerable to the pace and bounce of the Australian conditions. Rohit could only score eight runs before being caught behind, while Kohli was out for a duck – a rare sight in ODI cricket. Despite the tough contest, Ponting insisted there was nothing to panic about these early stumbles.
“Perth is one of the toughest places to bat, even for the best players. They were facing world-class bowlers on a surface with both bounce and pace. Once they get more time in the middle, they will be fine.” Ponting explained.
