West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced plans to build a cricket stadium in Darjeeling in honor of Indian cricketer Richa Ghosh. Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for the cricketer, Banerjee said the initiative aims to celebrate Richa’s achievements and inspire future generations of Bengal cricketers.

Richa played an important role in winning the 2025 Women’s World Cup. He scored 235 runs in eight matches at an average of 39.16 and strike rate of 133.52. He scored 26 runs in 16 balls in the semi-final against Australia and 34 runs in 24 balls in the final against South Africa. The Blue Women lifted their first ICC trophy.

Mamata Banerjee said, “Richa became a world champion at the age of just 22. We honored her on behalf of the West Bengal government, but I want to do more. There is about 27 acres of land in Darjeeling and I have asked the mayor to plan a cricket stadium there. It should be named Richa Cricket Stadium so that people remember her performance in future and get inspired by it.”

Bengal Cricket Association awards ₹34 lakh to Richa Ghosh

Richa Ghosh was honored by the Government of West Bengal and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) at a grand felicitation ceremony at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 8, 2025, for her stellar performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup.

Mamata Banerjee personally handed over the appointment letter to Richa as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in West Bengal. The Chief Minister also presented him with the prestigious Banga Bhushan Award, a gold chain and hearty congratulations.

CAB gave him a cash prize of ₹34 lakh commensurate with his 34-run innings in the World Cup final against South Africa, along with a golden bat and ball in appreciation of his efforts in India’s historic title win.

Richa Ghosh’s stadium proposal can create history!

Richa Ghosh showed calmness under pressure and explosive finishing skills. He scored 94 against South Africa in the group stage when India were struggling at 102 for six.

If West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s proposal to build a stadium in Richa’s honor becomes a reality, it will be a historic moment for women’s cricket in India. This will be the first stadium in the country to be named after a female cricketer.

While cricket legends like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami have stands named after them at Visakhapatnam’s ACA-VDCA Stadium and Kolkata’s Eden Gardens respectively, building an entire stadium dedicated to a female cricketer would be a notable milestone for the sport.
