As 2025 draws to a close, Google has revealed the global search trends for the year. The search engine giant is busy releasing its annual list of what people around the world searched for the most in 2025. Like previous years, this year’s list is also full of surprises.
In the list of top trending searches of sports teams, cricket fans got a big surprise. In this list, the names of Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals were ahead of all the other IPL teams. While both teams are generally considered to be two of the least popular IPL teams due to their poor records in the tournament, they managed to topple every other IPL franchise in the global search list.
Both teams are among the top five most searched sports teams in 2025. The list is led by French football club Paris Saint-Germain, followed by Benfica and Toronto Blue Jays. Punjab Kings are at fourth place followed by Delhi Capitals.

Punjab Kings’ memorable campaign in IPL 2025:
One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of Punjab Kings in 2025 was their excellent performance in the IPL. For the 2025 season, he completely overhauled his team and it paid off. Under the leadership of new captain Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings qualified for the IPL final for only the second time.
They managed to progress past the league stage for the first time since 2014 when they finished as runners-up. Delhi Capitals suffered another forgettable performance:
Unlike Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals failed to impress in IPL 2025. They had a strong team but could not qualify for the playoffs. Delhi Capitals finished fifth with 7 wins in 14 matches.
Both Delhi and Punjab are yet to win the IPL and will be desperate to progress next season. Ahead of next year’s IPL, both teams will have the opportunity to strengthen their squads in the upcoming mini auction
