The ODI future of senior players Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami is being widely debated as they are all set to begin preparations for the ICC World Cup 2027. Mohammed Shami has been out of the Indian team for a long time.
While Ravindra Jadeja has retired from T20I cricket, Mohammed Shami has been repeatedly ignored by the selectors, with multiple reports suggesting that the selectors are not happy with his outspokenness in front of the media. Some also suggested that the selectors were not confident about his form and fitness.
Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami’s dream is to play ICC World Cup.
However, both the experienced stars still want to play in the ICC World Cup 2027, but their place in the ODI team is no longer confirmed. The Indian cricket team management has started paying more attention to the young players to prepare for the next World Cup.

The selectors have recently tried out other spin options like Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav to test new team combinations. Because of this, there is pressure on Ravindra Jadeja’s place in the ODI team. India’s ODI tour of England in July 2026 can become a very important series for the spin all-rounder.
Things are not good for Shami also. Despite performing well in domestic cricket, the senior Indian fast bowler was not selected for the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year. Instead, the selectors have started giving chances to young fast bowlers like Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna.
Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami not part of India’s World Cup 2027 plans
And then, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has already started planning for the ICC World Cup 2027. After the upcoming IPL 2026, the Men in Blue are expected to play around 25 to 30 ODIs to test different players and find the best team combination.
It is almost certain that senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play in that mega event. Both players are now playing only the 50-over format after retiring from Test and T20I cricket. But a PTI journalist claimed that Shami and Jadeja are not part of the ICC World Cup 2027 plans.

He indicated that Rohit, Shubman Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah have almost finalized the ODI event, but there is no place for Ravindra Jadeja and Shami.

Busy program ahead for India
Well, India will have a very busy schedule in the coming months. After IPL 2026, the Men in Blue will host Afghanistan for one Test and three ODIs. The team will then travel to England for a white-ball series and may also play a match against the Ireland national cricket team.
They can play three T20Is or three ODIs at the beginning or end of the tour in July. All these matches are part of India’s preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The team wants to test many players before finalizing the team for the big tournament.
