Former India captain Sourav Ganguly’s first season as coach is going to be more memorable as Pretoria Capitals reached the final of the ongoing SA20 tournament under his coaching and guidance. Capitals reached the final by defeating Sunrisers Eastern Caves yesterday. The second team for the summit clash has not been decided yet. The final match of the current SA20 season will be played on Sunday, January 25.
Sourav Ganguly has been associated with the Capitals franchise for a long time, but this is his first stint as a full-time head coach. It will be historic for them and also for Indian cricket if Pretoria Capitals manages to win the league as well as lift the cup this coming Sunday. Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has marked a special performance for Pretoria Capitals with his latest ‘X’ post.
How did Pretoria Capitals reach the SA20 final?
Earlier, the Capitals finished second on the points table in the fourth season of the SA20 with 24 points after winning five games and losing four. This season, they have emerged as one of the most exciting teams in the league under the captaincy of seasoned veteran Keshav Maharaj.
They defeated Sunrisers Eastern Cape by seven wickets in Qualifier 1 at Kingsmead on Wednesday. South Africa’s young batsman Dewald Brewis had a big role in the outcome of the match. Brewis took the team to the final by scoring unbeaten 75 runs in 38 balls with the help of four fours and seven sixes.
For Ashwin, it was another historic achievement from former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who was also a former BCCI president. Ashwin said that Ganguly is now showing his excellence as a coach in the rainbow country.
Pretoria Capitals’ journey so far in the ongoing SA20 tournament
As mentioned earlier, they are currently one of the most dominant teams in the league. They finished the group stage as the second best team with 5 wins and 4 losses from 10 matches. With 24 points, they were second, just behind Sunrisers, who were on top of the table with 28 points.
Proven T20 batsmen like Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope have scored most of the runs for the Capitals so far. Rutherford is firmly in the race to become the league’s leading run-scorer. Hope’s innings of 118 not out has become the highlight of this edition of SA20. Bryce Parsons is one of the best finds of the tournament so far.
