Former Indian national cricket team batsman Robin Uthappa has soon supported the famous off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to take over as the head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team.

Robin Uthappa said that Ravichandran Ashwin would be a “attractive coach” and he would get several IPL franchises that will be interested in keeping him in his setup.

He said goodbye to the IPL, a year after retirement from international cricket, which he declared in December during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

The veteran off-spinner started his journey in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and ended it with the same team, which was purchased by a five-time champion for 9.75 crores in the IPL 2025 mega auction by a five-time champion.

Overall, the 38 -year -old represented five franchisees – Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Junts, Delhi Capital, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals – in the IPL.

He played 221 games in the Marki T20 League and on an average of 187 wickets, 7.20 economy and 25.1 strike rate at an average of 30.22. In particular, he finished his career as the fifth highest wicket -taker in IPL history.

In a video shared on his official YouTube channel, Robin Uthappa, who shone for CSK in IPL, said Ravichandran Ashwin’s IPL heritage would not be considered as great as it was in international cricket, where he had taken 765 wickets in 287 matches.

Giving the reason behind his adventure claim, Robin Uthappa said that Ashwin used defensive options compared to aggressive people in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which he had done in the international cricket sector was completely opposite.

Robin Uthappa said, “I think his legacy (as an IPL player) would not be great as an international cricketer as he said due to options used after a certain point,” Robin Uthappa said.

“He used a lot of defensive options in the IPL compared to international cricket, especially the aggressive options used in international cricket, especially Test cricket.

Uthappa further said that Ashwin’s journey in coaching and mentorship roles would be an interesting and also supported him to become head coaches in the IPL. He said:

“I think he will create an attractive coach. But I think his life is going to be more entrepreneur than getting stuck in a coach’s job. He will be a type of patron. It will be a great role for him. He can be a head coach in the IPL. He may be taking something for him.”
