Ravichandran Ashwin lashed out at Gautam Gambhir: India will face England in the Semi-Final 2 of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM IST, and there is little chance that dew will play any role in this game as it did for India against West Indies at the Eden Gardens.
Ahead of this important match, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a dig at the head coach of the Indian national cricket team, Gautam Gambhir. After India’s win against the Windies, Gambhir was asked during the post-match press conference how the team relies on data during match preparation. In response, the head coach said that he does not believe the statistics.
This is his methodology- Ravichandran Ashwin
Taking a dig at Gambhir’s comments in the post-match press conference, Ashwin has given his insight on how important data can be, and how if used properly, it can be very useful to cricketers, and can also become their biggest enemy in the years to come.
Ashwin while talking to Vimal Kumar said, “Look, the coach is saying that he will not use this data and that is fine. This is his methodology. Vimal bhai, see, how can I handle this? What is the data? Data is anything, no? Data is a wagon wheel. Data is how many balls, which bowlers, which fields.”
Here is the video
“Look, you can say that in Adil Rashid and Surya’s match, Adil Rashid bowled so many balls and Surya scored so many runs. It could be data. People are actually misunderstanding the data. Data is not meant to give you numbers and I am just reading them.”
England use data incredibly well- Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin further said that England is a team which has used data very well. Over the years, he has been excellent in terms of data and doing his homework against cricketers, be it batsmen or bowlers. Ashwin has no complaints against those who do not use data.
“I hope you understand that. There is one thing in data interpretation. Addressing the data. England use data incredibly well. I know this. They use it very well there. You may have heard that Ashe thinks a lot about the game. I played my game. I have a lot of respect for people who don’t want to use data.”
“Because data is one thing if you can use it, it is your friend. If you don’t know how to use it, it is your enemy. Moving the game forward, players have to be smart players. You have to understand the data. The game will take you there. The longevity of the players will depend on it.”
Ravichandran Ashwin compared cricket to examination
R Ashwin compared the data to the exam, just like a student studies from a book before giving the exam, similarly a cricketer should study and understand the data before playing a match and this will also help the cricketers to work on their weaknesses and strengths.
Ravichandran Ashwin kept saying, “What is data, Vimal Bhai? You should use the data and practice with it. You should have the data in your hand and analyze it. What is the exam in school? You are reading a book and then giving the exam. It does not mean that you are going to give the exam with an open book. Data is such a thing.”
Ravichandran Ashwin finally said, “Work with the data. What is your strength? What is your weakness? Read it. If you can put forward your strength, put it forward. What is your weakness? Read it and see how to address it. You said I was comfortable. No.”
“I was just ready to spend more time on my preparation. Because if you have data, you have to cross-verify it. You can say that Vimal bhai is weak against bouncers. I will come and bowl bouncers. Just because you have given me data, I will come and bowl bouncers. You have hit an uppercut for a six.”
