Former India national cricket team off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has addressed the growing speculation linking him with coaching roles with the England Test team and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Speaking with journalist Vimal Kumar on his official YouTube show ‘Aish Ki Baat’, Ashwin reacted briefly to the reports before sharing his views on England’s future following the departure of Brendon McCullum as Test coach.
Ravichandran Ashwin has recently been linked to England’s vacant Test coaching position, while many fans have also suggested him for a possible return to CSK in a coaching role, as reports suggest that Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise has come to an end.
Reports and rumors link Ravichandran Ashwin to England, CSK coaching roles
Speculation over Ashwin’s future intensified after news aggregator Johns claimed on X that there had been discussions regarding England’s vacant Test coaching role.
The post said that Ravichandran Ashwin is among the names being considered and the meetings were reportedly held in the United States.
At the same time, Ashwin’s name also started being discussed among CSK supporters. Along with Stephen Fleming’s exit have come reports that members of their coaching staff may leave the franchise. Many fans started predicting that the experienced off-spinner might return to Chennai in a coaching capacity after his playing career.
Ravichandran Ashwin addresses England coaching speculations
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin did not confirm or deny the England reports. Instead, he gave a brief response that left the door open without revealing any details.
When Vimal Kumar asked Ashwin about becoming the England Test coach, he replied, “Give some time. I will tell you. Just give some time.”
This was the only direct comment made by the great spinner in relation to England’s speculation before the discussion shifted to the England Test team and his future.
Although he stayed away from discussing his future, Ravichandran Ashwin spoke at length about the challenges awaiting England’s next Test coach.
He said that England’s aggressive approach under Brendon McCullum produced exciting cricket, but the team’s refusal to adapt to different match situations also divided opinion.
“There were times when England completely controlled the game, but they lost just because they ignored common sense. You can’t play Test cricket like that.”
Ashwin said the McCullum-Ben Stokes model has reached a stage where it will be difficult to sustain and he believes England are entering a challenging transition period. The former India spinner also highlighted the importance of Joe Root in England’s rebuilding phase.
“It was becoming too difficult. It was no longer sustainable. The model that McCullum and Stokes followed in Test cricket had reached a point where it became too difficult to continue. Joe Root is a 24-karat gold Test batsman, and his contribution will be incredibly important.”
Ashwin finally said that he is hopeful that England can recover strongly as England’s competitive team is good for the future of Test cricket.
Ravichandran Ashwin avoids answering CSK coaching question
Towards the end of the conversation, Ashwin was also asked about the possibility of joining CSK’s coaching setup after Stephen Fleming’s exit.
Instead of giving a direct answer, the veteran off-spinner smiled, paused for a few moments and ended the episode without addressing the speculations.
He said, “I want to thank everyone for joining us. Thank you so much for joining us on this episode.”
Ashwin then announced that his channel would dedicate a separate episode to Stephen Fleming’s contribution to CSK before signing up. His response neither confirmed nor quashed the rumors, leaving the coaching speculations for both England and CSK unresolved for now.
