Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his experience of working with Ravi Shastri. He got a scolding from the former India head coach for sharing the secret with the media. Ravichandran Ashwin explained his bowling method during an interview after the match.

“I was playing a Test match in Birmingham and bowled to Alastair Cook. After the match, I was giving an interview and talked about how the ball came out of my hand. When I returned, Ravi Bhai was staring at me in the dressing room. I thought, “I bowled well, didn’t I?”
“Then he [Ravi Shastri] He said, “Why are you sharing all the secrets?” I was scared. [Laughs] Honestly, that’s when I realized I shouldn’t have shared these details. I had never felt like this before, but looking back I realized that it was a mistake to tell what I bowled and how I bowled.”

Ravichandran Ashwin’s career
Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18, 2024 and later from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 27, 2025. He retired from the international game as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test history and has since continued playing in overseas franchise leagues.
He has 537 wickets to his name in 106 Test matches, making him India’s second highest Test wicket taker of all time after Anil Kumble. He took 765 wickets in all international formats. He was also a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and won the 2013 Champions Trophy with India.
“I was inspired” – Ravichandran Ashwin reveals why he became an off-spinner
Ravichandran Ashwin also revealed that he was not an off-spinner initially, and was a medium pacer. He became a spinner after watching Piyush Chawla bowl.
Ashwin said, “I wasn’t even a spinner then. I was a medium pace bowler who could bat a bit. We also played together for India Under-17 and I was a batsman at that time too. Then, after watching Piyush bowl, I was inspired to bowl spin.”
Piyush Chawla responded to Ashwin’s statement by saying, “It’s generous of him to say that. I actually started out as a batsman, because as kids, who wants to bowl? Everyone wants to bat. I played as a batsman for Uttar Pradesh till the under-16 level and bowled part-time leg-spin. Tanmay, who is now an umpire, was my captain in the IPL when the team was not getting wickets.”
