Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has sought clarity from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) about his role in the squad for the IPL 2026 season. According to a report by Espncricinfo, the all-rounder has informed the franchise that he is open to move if he no longer fits his future plans.
Chennai Super Kings acquired Ashwin for Rs 9.75 crore at last year’s mega auction. Ashwin returned to his hometown team after eight years. He played nine out of 14 matches and took just seven wickets at the economy rate of 9.12.
It is worth noting that this was his most expensive season, which crossed his previous best 8.49. It was also his first season after his start in 2009, where he played less than 12 games.

The timeline to release players before IPL 2026 depends on the date of the auction, which is yet to be finalized. While the mega auction takes place every three years, there will be a mini auction between November and February.
Players may be a week before the trade auction. Meanwhile, Ashwin has asked Chennai Super Kings for clarity on his role in the 2026 season and is ready to leave the team if he does not fit his plans.
“R Ashwin has asked his team to clarify how he intends to use him in IPL 2026, ESPNcricinfo has learned. According to sources, he has told the franchise that there are no ways to participate with him if he does not fit their plans,” he was taught in the report.
Ravichandran Ashwin left CSK amidst Sanju Samson’s business request
There were reports of Ravichandran Ashwin’s departure from Chennai Super Kings that Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson had requested a business or release before the IPL 2026 auction.
Ashwin made his IPL career debut with CSK, enjoying the great success by winning the title under MS Dhoni in 2010 and 2011. He was also part of the teams that ended as runners up in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
Ashwin played for Rising Pune Super Zant (RPSG) in 2016, but missed the 2017 season due to injury. He then represented Punjab Kings (PBK) for two sessions before joining Delhi Capital (DC) for 2020 and 2021. Ashwin played for Rajasthan Royals between 2022 and 2024 before returning to CSK in 2025.
Ravichandran Ashwin takes the fifth biggest wicket of IPL
Ravichandran Ashwin is going to take the fifth tallest wicket in IPL history. He has taken the best figures of 4/34 with 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 out of 221 matches and an economy rate of 7.2. Ashwin is not only a skilled bowler, but has also contributed a valuable run, achieving 833 in the league.
CSK invested heavily in Ashwin to help end his game’s career, while it also included the team in nurturing talent through the academy. As the franchise undergoes a phase of infection, Ashwin’s experience and a strong relationship for CSK culture makes him an important person in the squad.
