The removal of Brendon McCullum from the post of Test head coach of England has sparked discussion on social media platforms. Hours after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officially announced the sacking of the former New Zealand captain from the Test team post, several claims are being made on social media platforms suggesting England’s next possible coach for the longest format of the game.
A shocking report has claimed that Team India’s former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is in line to fill the gap in England’s Test team. It is being said loudly that Ashwin can be the next coach of the national cricket team.

Ravichandran Ashwin is yet to assume new responsibility
After retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in August 2025, Ravichandran Ashwin has mostly been out of action. He was scheduled to debut in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) last season, but had to postpone those plans due to a knee injury.
Ravichandran Ashwin featured in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC), but was ruled out of the entire tournament due to a knee injury after bowling a few overs. Ashwin retired from the Indian Premier League with the intention of exploring other franchise leagues around the world. Due to injuries he remains on the sidelines most of the time.
Currently, Ravichandran Ashwin is mostly seen discussing various cricket-related topics during online conversations. If recent claims are to be believed then the former spinner of Team India can start a new journey on the cricket field. This time he can debut not as a player but as a coach.

Who will become the head coach of England?
According to ‘X’ Post, when Ashwin was in the United States recently, he had talked to ECB officials regarding the England Test team job.
The ‘X’ post reads, “Talks have been going on for some time regarding England’s red-ball job and Ashwin may also be involved in it. Sources say that some meetings have also taken place in America recently.”

Andy Flower is also among the speculations about who could be England’s next head coach for Tests
Despite the strong and surprising claim, according to local UK media reports, the England cricket governing body is all set to appoint Andy Flower as their next coach for the Test format.
Andy Flower has worked with the England national cricket team with success in the past. Under his guidance the team achieved the top position in the Test team rankings. The experienced coach has led the team to three Ashes wins and some important wins against India as well. Flower’s first stint as England head coach was from 2009 to 2014.
The Ashes between England and Australia is one of the most famous rivalries among cricket playing nations, and the outcome of the series means a lot to both nations. Brendon McCullum’s England Test cricket team suffered a crushing 1-4 defeat in Australia in the last season of the Ashes, which became one of the main issues behind McCullum’s future with the team. However, he will remain the coach for the ODI and T20I formats.
