A tremendous batting performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 has sparked both praise and debate, with Vaibhav Suryavashi’s record-breaking innings gaining weight from Ravichandran Ashwin after capturing the attention of the entire cricket world.

India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi made waves in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 by scoring a breathtaking century in just 36 balls for Bihar against Arunachal Pradesh on December 24. This was one of the most explosive innings seen in List-A cricket.

Suryavanshi created a lot of havoc at the crease and scored 190 runs in just 84 balls. His innings was full of clean hitting, to which the bowlers had no answer and the spectators were also disappointed. The left-handed batsman created history at a very young age by scoring his maiden List-A century, when he was just 14 years and 272 days old.

This made Suryavanshi the youngest player to score a century in List-A cricket, and broke the long-standing previous record held by Pakistan’s Zahoor Elahi, who was 15 years and 209 days old when he reached the milestone in 1986.

Not only this, the Bihar opener scored 150 runs in just 59 balls, which is now the fastest 150 runs ever in List-A cricket. In doing so, the India U19 batting sensation overtook the record set by South African legend AB de Villiers during the 2015 ODI World Cup.

Here’s how Sooryavanshi broke records:

it goes: 190

balls faced:84

strike rate: 226.19

boundaries:16

sixes:15

He completed his century in just 36 balls, making it one of the fastest centuries in the history of Vijay Hazare Trophy and taking Bihar to a mammoth score of 574/6. Chasing an impossible target, Arunachal Pradesh were bowled out for 177 runs, leaving Bihar second in all List-A cricket with 397 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin reacts: Praise for talent, concerns about structure

Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin praised Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his pure masterclass, but he highlighted how uneven matches can affect the spirit of the competition. He stressed that players like Vaibhav can only play what is in front of him and he deserves full credit for doing his job brilliantly, but a heavy defeat could hurt the confidence of teams like Arunachal Pradesh.

“Huge applause for Vaibhav Suryavanshi. But I want to ask a question again. With some teams there is a huge divide in terms of quality. With some teams it becomes very unbalanced and there is no competition at all,” Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.

This is not an ideal competition. Credit to Vaibhav for his performance. He is doing whatever he has to do. But if we are serious about making teams like Arunachal Pradesh into good teams, how will this affect their confidence?”

Shashi Tharoor and Shikhar Dhawan praised Vaibhav Suryavanshi a lot

Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan lauded Vaibhav’s brilliant innings in the ongoing VHT tournament on Wednesday. Tharoor also tagged BCCI, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir in his post for Vaibhav.
