MCA to honor Ravi Shastri: Mumbai has been the hub for Indian cricket to produce some of the greatest cricketers who have played and captained India for both long and short periods. The list of people like Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma is very long.
Over the years, these cricketers have earned their name in Indian cricket as well as world cricket. Last year, in May 2025, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had celebrated India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma, former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar and former BCCI president Sharad Pawar.
Ravi Shastri will be honored by giving a stand
The above three legends of Mumbai cricket got stands named after them at the city’s historic Wankhede Stadium. The stadium also has stands dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar. Last year, there was talk of MCA paying tribute to another former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri.

However, exactly a year later, new reports have come from the Indian Express that the MCA is set to finalize its stand on Shastri. The gates will be named after former Indian women’s captain Diana Edulji, late Dilip Sardesai and late Eknath Solkar. MCA President Ajinkya Naik confirmed this while talking to Indian Express.
His important role in shaping modern Indian cricket as a coach- Shishir Hattangadi
Last year, former Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi had written a letter to MCA requesting to honor Shastri. “I must express my surprise and concern at the exclusion of former India captain, all-rounder and national coach Ravi Shastri from the list of names to be commemorated at the stadium,” the former player wrote in the letter.
“His legacy is well known – not only for his iconic achievement of hitting six sixes in an over in a first-class game, following in the footsteps of Sir Gary Sobers – but also for his impressive career as a player and his vital role in shaping modern Indian cricket as a coach.”
Ravi Shastri changed the dynamics of Indian cricket
Shastri was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and also captained India for a short period. However, under his coaching, the India national cricket team played amazing and fearless cricket. Ravi Shastri was the first coach to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in two consecutive series in 2018/19, followed by the 2020-21 series.
Shastri and Virat Kohli experienced significant success in Test cricket, as India won 25 out of 43 Tests under their leadership. It was a great patch for the Men in Blue team under his leadership. During his tenure, India never lost a Test series in India. Later, Shastri was replaced by Rahul Dravid in 2022.
Now that there is talk of a stand named after him, it would be a huge honor for the former India head coach. Shastri has now joined commentary and is included in the panel of commentators for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
