Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted players of the India women’s national cricket team at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg in Delhi on Wednesday, November 5.
Harmanpreet Kaur-led India women’s national cricket team also presented a signed “NaMo” jersey to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a token of respect after their victory in the domestic World Cup.
India won the World Cup for the first time by defeating South Africa
Team India faced South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
In the match, South Africa women’s national cricket team won the toss and invited India to bat first. The host team performed brilliantly while batting first and scored a huge score of 298/7 on the board. Shafali Verma was the star of the innings and scored an aggressive 87 runs in 78 balls with the help of 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Deepti Sharma also scored a brilliant half-century while Smriti Mandhana (45), Richa Ghosh (34), Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and Harmanpreet Kaur (20) also scored important runs.
Defending the target, the hosts kept taking wickets at regular intervals and Deepti Sharma sealed the win by dismissing Laura Wolvaardt after her century.
Sharma took a historic 5 wickets, while Shafali Verma took two wickets, and Sri Charani got one wicket, as India bowled out South Africa for 246 runs.
PM Narendra Modi met world champions
After making India proud, Harmanpreet Kaur & Company was invited by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. He had a healthy chat with the players and congratulated them on the historic win.
India’s journey to World Cup victory was not an easy one, as they faced heavy criticism after losing three consecutive matches and PM Modi praised the team for a great comeback.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled a meeting with PM Modi after the 2017 World Cup loss and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana told the Prime Minister that she inspired the team and played a major role in the girls’ excellent performance in all fields in the country.
Meanwhile, Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma told the PM that she was looking forward to meeting him and the BJP leader discussed Jai Shri Ram written on her Instagram bio and the tattoo of Lord Hanuman on her arm.
Harmanpreet Kaur asked a cheeky question to PM
Meanwhile, Harmanpreet Kaur further asked PM Modi a cheeky question, questioning how he always lives in the present, to which he calmly replied that it has become a part of his life.
After remembering Harleen Deol’s iconic catch in 2021, the PM talked about the sensational juggling catch taken by Amanjot Kaur to send back the Proteas captain in the final.
The PM light-heartedly told Kaur that she would be looking at the ball, but after the catch, she would be looking at the trophy. PM Narendra Modi also extended an invitation to Kranti Gaur’s brother, after Kranti Gaur told him that he was one of her big fans and urged the girls to carry forward the message of the Fit India movement.
