Former England batsman Mark Butcher praised the performance of Gautam Gambhir and Team India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He not only praised the winners as a unit, but also their strategy of moving forward by prioritizing individual milestones.
India won their second consecutive T20 World Cup, but it seemed clear that they had moved on from the idea of just one player’s contribution in terms of run count or wickets piled up. This World Cup win for India was a combination of the efforts of every member of that playing eleven.
Ever since Gautam Gambhir took charge of the Indian team as head coach, he has worked hard, tried many combinations and then finalized the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup which, according to him, could secure all ends, and it did.
India and Pakistan’s fortunes are opposite in ICC tournaments
The Men in Blue have been the best team in ICC tournaments in the last three years. The last time they lost an ICC tournament knockout game was in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. India lost the final against Australia and have been unbeaten since then.
India, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, shattered its World Cup illusion by winning the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados. After this he won the Champions Trophy in Dubai in 2025. With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 victory, India has now won three consecutive ICC tournaments.
Pakistan, on the other hand, have been very unlucky in the last four ICC tournaments. The last time he made it to the knockouts was in the T20 World Cup final in 2022 against England. Since then, they have exited four ICC tournaments without reaching the semi-finals.
England star praised Gautam Gambhir’s foresight in T20, mocked Pakistan for its old mentality.
Former England batsman Mark Butcher praised Gautam Gambhir’s philosophy of moving away from superstar culture and focusing on a more strong team effort. Butcher also criticized India’s arch rival, Pakistan, as the Men in Green are still stuck on individual milestones.
Butcher said on India’s dominance, “There’s quite a paradox in that their neighbors in Pakistan are still stuck in the idea of individual achievements and individual superstars. Gautam Gambhir, who had his critics during his tenure, has basically moved away from that mantra and built a team.”
He said, “The point is that to win a game of T20 cricket, it does not matter who the star is, whether it is a team with great defensive bowling or a bowling team that bowls out a team for 120 and then you target them in 10 overs, it is all about what gets you the result.”
Bumrah won that game for India – declared Mark Butcher
Butcher claimed that bowlers are the vital pivot of any team in any format of the game. He highlighted the huge scoring contest between India and England, where the Indian bowlers prevented them from achieving the most thrilling win of the World Cup semi-final.
In that contest, while all the bowlers were giving away runs, Bumrah gave an incredible performance by conceding only 33 runs in his 4 overs. He bowled the 18th over and gave only 6 runs whereas England needed 45 runs in the last three overs.
“Look at India’s win over England in the semi-final, there were a lot of complaints that there was nothing for the bowlers in it. The bowlers won that game—Bumrah won that game for India. His two overs in the last five…those two overs stopped England in their tracks and stopped England from having the most extraordinary run chase you’ll see in a semi-final,” Butcher said (via the above source).
“So I have no objection to the idea that bowlers are not important in T20 cricket; they absolutely are, as they are in every format of the game,” he said.
