Hours before the high-voltage India vs New Zealand T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, March 8, a big drama unfolded off the field in Ahmedabad that caught everyone’s attention.
With thousands of cricket fans gathering to watch the title clash between the Indian national cricket team and the New Zealand national cricket team, the Ahmedabad Police launched a surprise crackdown on illegal ticket sales near the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Two illegal ticket sellers arrested before T20 World Cup 2026 final
According to an India Today report, the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch caught two people who were secretly selling match tickets at very high prices ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final. Police officials immediately took action after receiving information about suspicious activity near Osmanpura Gujarat Vidyapeeth bus stand area.

They laid a trap and stopped the suspects for investigation. During the search they recovered eight match tickets being sold illegally. Investigation revealed that the accused had earlier purchased tickets through online booking and were trying to sell them to desperate fans at almost three times the original price.
Each ticket was reportedly being offered for around ₹10,000. The police immediately confiscated all the tickets and initiated legal action against the two men. Officials are now investigating whether more people are involved in this illegal ticket racket. Police believe there may be a larger network trying to take advantage of the huge demand for the India vs New Zealand final.
Extensive security deployment for T20 World Cup 2026 final
Meanwhile, security has been tightened across Ahmedabad ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final. Ahmedabad police chief GS Malik revealed that over 3,000 police personnel along with around 1,000 home guards have been deployed at the stadium and surrounding areas to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
PTI quoted GS Malik as saying, “Tomorrow the historic T20 World Cup final is going to be held here at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The police have completed all preparations for this. We are deploying more than 3,000 policemen and about 1,000 home guards.”

Police suspect a large black marketing network
The city police chief made it clear that the police will not tolerate any black-marketing of tickets ahead of the big final, where India will look to defend the T20 World Cup title while the Black Caps are chasing their maiden title. He said that strict action will be taken if caught selling tickets illegally.
Malik signed off by saying, “If any such activity comes to our notice, the police will register a case. We also have clear instructions from higher authorities to take immediate action against anyone involved in black marketing.”
