Amid India’s tour of England, England opener Phil Salt shared a funny backstage story on how he and Virat Kohli bonded. Phil Salt was then new to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) dressing room, so he had little idea of what Virat Kohli was like as a person.
Virat Kohli’s touring figure is still intimidating for newcomers. It would be wrong to think that Phil Salt joined an IPL franchise and immediately formed a strong bond with the Indian superstar.
Phil Salt reveals backstage incident with Virat Kohli
It was an unplanned incident that set both Kohli and Salt on the right path. Speaking on the Super Over podcast with host Nikhil Uttamchandani, Phil Salt shared that he somehow broke the ice during RCB’s open training session.
Since it marked a fresh start before the new season, the franchise arranged for an interactive session with its fans. So, there were promotional foam balls that cricketers were asked to throw towards the crowd. It was a fun activity between the players and fans.
Phil Salt was new in the RCB camp then
Salt, looking for more entertainment, thought of throwing the ball to his compatriot Liam Livingstone, who was standing at a distance from Salt at that time. The English opener picked up the foam ball and threw it. The opener aimed to hit Livingstone, but the ball took the wrong route and instead of hitting Livingstone, it went straight to Virat Kohli.
As Salt claimed in the podcast, Virat was angry then; The ball hit him directly on the temple. Virat knew it was Salt, but he was looking around and trying to behave normally. After a few moments, he ran straight towards Salt and tackled him.
“Run at me, tackle me”: Virat Kohli’s response to Phil Salt
The word tackle may sound harsh to hear or read, but this was no hard tackle; This was Virat Kohli’s own way of welcoming the batsman.
“It was RCB’s open training. They gave us these foam balls, and they were all over the changing rooms; there were hundreds of them. And then you have to either throw them into the crowd or hit them into the crowd with a tennis racket.”
“And I looked at Livy out of the corner of my eye. I thought, “Okay, he’s getting it now.” And I flipped this thing on me and threw it right at his temple. And he looked around; he was angry. I just looked away, just kept walking normally,” Salt said.
“And then I took a quick look around… He was staring straight at me, knew it was me. Ran over me, tackled me, and he was the best ice-breaker I think. I think he’s used to people worshiping him – and with everything he’s achieved, that’s true. So I think it’s actually quite a task for him to relax in front of these people, because they don’t relax,” he added in the same stream.
How did the Virat-Namak partnership begin?
Who knew that from this moment they would become one of the most successful opening pairs of IPL.
