Former Australian great Jason Gillespie, who held the position of Pakistan’s red-ball coach for almost six months between April and November 2026, has cited repeated insults by the PCB as the main reason behind his resignation.
The PCB has never had a good rapport with the coaches, especially in recent times. Over the past two years, several coaches have been repeatedly dismissed by the PCB, or have resigned from their roles. One of such names is that of former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie.
However, before Gillespie, there was former South African batsman Gary Kirsten, who served as the coach for India’s World Cup-winning team in 2011 and then led South Africa to the No. 1 ranking. 1 ranking in test cricket. However, the legendary coach also resigned from the post of Pakistan’s white ball coach.
Jason Gillespie resigns as Pakistan coach after 8 months
Jason Gillespie joined Pakistan as their red-ball coach in April 2024 and later also filled the position of white-ball coach as their interim coach. Although, under his reign, Pakistan did not have the best of starts, losing 2β0 to Bangladesh at home, they bounced back and during his tenure, they finally broke their Test misfortune with a 2β1 win over England.
He also took some bold decisions, such as dropping batsman Babar Azam from Pakistan’s Test XI citing poor form, and replacing him with Kamran Ghulam in the national setup, who proved effective with a century on debut. However, during his coaching tenure with Pakistan, the coach had several differences with the PCB.
During a question-and-answer session on X, Gillespie revealed that his disagreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board and the sacking of his senior assistant coach without any prior notice were the main reasons for his resignation from the post.
Gillespie explained the reason for his resignation, writing, “There were a number of issues that left me completely humiliated.”
During a chat session with Gillespie a user questioned his decision to opt out of Pakistan coaching, and the Australian quickly responded. He alleged that he was ‘humiliated’ at the hands of PCB.
Gillespie wrote in his response on X, “I was coaching the Pakistan Test team. The PCB dismissed our senior assistant coach without any contact with me about this β as head coach, I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were a number of other issues which completely humiliated me.”

Former Pakistan coach reveals Mohsin Naqvi’s indifference within PCB
However, this is not the first time that the former Pakistan coach has targeted the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan management, even during his coaching days with the Pakistan national team, he had targeted PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi for his ignorant attitude.
He told about a great connection camp organized by Gary Kirsten, and people like Kirsten and Gillespie all came from South Africa and Australia, but Naqvi, who was in Lahore, did not drive 20 minutes to reach the venue and attended the meeting via Zoom call.
Gillespie said, “He lives in Lahore but he didn’t come, whereas Gary came from Africa. We both thought the chairman couldn’t even make the 20-minute drive to come here β that was a bit unusual.”
Currently, the Pakistan team let go of Azhar Mahmood as their red-ball coach three months before his tenure ended, while Mike Hesson remains as their white-ball coach. It should be noted who will be signed next as the red ball coach.
