Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed this on Monday night. Shaheen Afridi Will lead the Pakistan men’s team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting from November 4 in Faisalabad. Replaces the 25-year-old fast bowler Mohammad RizwanWho captained the team for only one year.
Shaheen Afridi took over the ODI captaincy of Pakistan
This is Afridi’s second stint as white-ball captain, following his brief stint as T20I captain in early 2024. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, head coach Mike Hesson and the national selectors unanimously approved the decision, emphasizing Afridi’s leadership abilities and commitment.
The PCB said in its official statement that Afridi’s appointment is part of a “The unanimous decision aims to reinvigorate Pakistan’s white-ball system.” The board also expressed “We have full confidence in Shaheen’s leadership qualities and his ability to inspire the next generation of players.”
Mohammad Rizwan’s short-lived captaincy ends
After the resignation of Babar Azam, Rizwan’s ODI captaincy, which started in October 2024, has suddenly ended. Although Rizwan initially led Pakistan to series wins in Australia and South Africa, the team’s performance declined rapidly in 2025.
Out of group stage in ICC Champions TrophyThe scrutiny of Rizwan’s leadership intensified after Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series defeat to the West Indies. According to reports, head coach Mike Hesson formally recommended a review of Rizwan’s status after the Champions Trophy defeat.
Rizwan’s personal form also declined during 2025, averaging 36.10 with a strike rate of 71 in ODIs. Despite the setback, PCB officials confirmed he will remain “An important member of the ODI and Test team” And will continue to be considered for selection.
Opportunity for liberation and leadership for Shaheen Afridi
For Afridi, the appointment represents a second chance at leadership and an important moment of liberation. His first captaincy stint in T20Is ended prematurely after a 4–1 defeat to New Zealand and Babar was reinstated as captain.
However, Afridi’s performance on the field has been exceptional. He was Pakistan’s leading ODI wicket-taker in 2024, maintaining an impressive average of more than two wickets per game since the 2023 World Cup. Known for his intensity and composure, Afridi commands deep respect in the dressing room, with teammates often describing him as a natural leader.
The PCB believes that his aggressive but balanced approach will complement Hesson’s tactical expertise, forming the cornerstone of Pakistan’s 50-over revival strategy. However, the board stressed that Rizwan will remain an integral part of Pakistan’s cricket plans “Continuity and Stability” As the team enters a new leadership era.
