Pat Cummins out of T20 World Cup 2026, despite leaving out CSK star, Steve Smith did not get a place

Australia has suffered a major setback before the T20 World Cup 2026 starting from 7 February. Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the tournament with a back injury, and the selectors have included Ben Dwarshuis in the squad, while also confirming that Steve Smith will not be part of the campaign.

Matthew Renshaw has been included in place of Matt Short. Renshaw had made his T20I debut two days ago in the first T20I against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Steve Smith has been left out despite calls for his inclusion after an impressive cameo for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League season.

Pat Cummins out of T20 World Cup; Ben Dwarshuis named replacement

Australia selector Tony Dodemade said Pat Cummins needs more time to recover from his back injury. Dodemide said Ben Dwarshuis adds variety with his left-arm pace and ability to score runs down the order.

Dodamide said, “Pat needs more time to recover from his back injury and Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late hitting.”

“We believe his ability to swing the ball at good pace with clever variations will suit our expected conditions and overall composition of the team.

Matthew Renshaw replaces Matt Short in World Cup squad

Tony Dodemade said so Matthew Renshaw earned his place after impressive performances across all formats in recent times. With the top order settled and spin-friendly conditions expected in Sri Lanka, Dodemide said Renshaw adds stability to the middle order.

“Matt (Renshaw) has impressed across all formats recently, including multiple roles in white-ball formats for Australia, Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat.

“With the top order set to settle in the pool stages in Sri Lanka and spin heavy conditions expected, we also feel that Matt provides additional middle-order support, with Tim David completing his return to the playing schedule in the early stages of the tournament.

“As a left-handed batsman, he (Renshaw) makes a difference in middle-order batting as well.”

Australia’s updated team for T20 World Cup:

Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnman, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

Australia will begin its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Australia will also face Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Oman in their remaining group stage matches.

Each team will play a single round-robin match in the group stage, with the top teams advancing to the Super Eight round and the remaining teams being eliminated from the tournament. In the Super Eights, the eight teams will be divided into two groups of four each, and the results of the first round will not carry forward.

Teams will face each other once in the Super Eights and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final, where the title of T20 World Cup 2026 will be decided on March 8.
