Former Australian cricketer Ian Healy has urged the selectors to rest captain Pat Cummins for the home Ashes 2025-26 series against Australia, which is scheduled to begin on November 21. Healy said Australia had limited experienced fast bowling options, but recalling the Australian captain could jeopardize his fitness.

Australia have a fast bowling quartet of Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland and their dominance has created an experience gap. With Cummins unavailable, Boland is expected to be selected as the third fast bowler, while Michael Neser, Fergus O’Neill and Xavier Bartlett remain in contention.

Don’t risk Pat Cummins at all – Ian Healy

Ian Healy said that Pat Cummins is irreplaceable to the team because of his consistency, leadership and composure. Healy said Cummins should not rush his recovery from injury, but Australia lack other experienced fast bowling options in case there are further injury concerns.

“That would be a huge miss but don’t risk Pat Cummins at all. He’s a composed player and an absolutely consistent performer. He’s our back when we need him to be and he gets the job done. He’s patient, calm and a strong leader. Scott Boland is going to be in the attack – he’ll be in the front row but if we get injured who else do we have?” Healy said at SENQ Breakfast.

Pat Cummins is recovering from a groin stress injury sustained following Australia’s tour of the West Indies, which has also forced him out of the upcoming home white-ball series against India.

Recent scans revealed that the injury has not fully healed, reducing his chances of playing in the Ashes. In his possible absence, Steve Smith, who will captain for parts of the 2023–24 season, is expected to lead the side.

Michael Neser in talks for any Test – Ian Healy

Ian Healy said that the experience of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon can take the team forward even without Pat Cummins. He also revealed that Michael Neser is a strong contender for selection for the upcoming home series.

Healy added, “Michael Neser is in talks for any Test. I would like him to get a game. Then there are the engaged teammates. He shares beers, drinks wine, has great friends within the team.”

“Starc, the wicket-taking bowler, (Nathan) Lyon is real container, and Hazlewood never gives up. They can get the job done without Cummins.”

He is number one – Ian Healy

The former cricketer said Michael Neser is Australia’s top choice for fast bowling replacement, with emerging talents Fergus O’Neill and Xavier Bartlett also in contention.

“Neser – if he’s the best candidate in our ranks, let’s include him. He’s number one. Then there’s a guy called Fergus O’Neill at number two, who took 38 wickets in the Sheffield Shield last year. He’s an excellent competitor. Number three, Xavier Bartlett – a young emerging player who is being tried at every level, Australia A, one-day, four-day and is performing very well,” Healy. Said.
