Papua New Guinea cricketer jailed for robbery

The cricketer had confessed to attacking a woman and stealing her mobile phone during the tour. The incident occurred on Hillary Street in St Helier at around midnight on 25 August. He did this when he was returning to his hotel late at night and then the woman was rescued by the police.

He then revealed that someone had punched him to the ground and taken his mobile phone. After this, Doriga was immediately taken into custody and interrogated by the concerned authorities.

Subsequently, the following day, he was formally charged with robbery and appeared at the Jersey Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the crime on 27 August. After the court proceedings ended, the Royal Court of Jersey rejected his bail plea and sentenced him to 3 years in jail.

Jersey Detective Sergeant praises visiting cricketer’s quick investigation

Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan of the Jersey State Police Criminal Investigation Division praised the rapid investigation, saying, “This was a fast-paced investigation with an unknown suspect who had only been on the island for a few days. Due to the nature of the allegation, which was a stranger attack on a lone woman at night, police dedicated several detectives and other assets who quickly identified Doriga, arrested him and recovered the stolen property.”

“We will continue to combat violence against women and girls and prioritize the safety of islanders,” he said.

Before such allegations were made, the cricketer had played matches against Denmark and Kuwait, with further matches scheduled to take place this week. But Papua New Guinea will now have to play without Doriga and bring in a new player.

Doriga looked in good form recently

The 30-year-old Papua New Guinea cricketer has played 97 matches for the team and was a part of their national team that made it to the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cups. However, they could not progress to the main stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. In the CWC Challenge Cup, he scored 68 against Denmark, but then came back to score just 12 against Kuwait.

This player has scored 998 and 359 runs in 53 List A matches and 43 T20 matches respectively. He also has 4 half-centuries to his name in ODI cricket and six half-centuries overall in his career. He holds many wicketkeeping records, including the record for second most dismissals and most catches in an innings in T20 cricket.
