Pakistan’s Usman Tariq accused of spectacular dodge against South Africa, caught on camera

Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq has found himself at the center of controversy after his unusual bowling action caused massive outrage on social media during the third and final T20I against South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday, November 1.

Usman Tariq was clearly seen in awe while bowling during Pakistan’s four-wicket win over South Africa in the final T20I in Lahore on Saturday. In the 10th over of the South African innings, Usman Tariq was seen unfairly gaining extra spin by straightening his arm beyond the permissible limit before delivering the ball to Donovan Ferreira.

Full toss bowled on the leg side at a speed of 94.1 km/hr. Ferreira timed it well as he flicked the ball across the square. He ran quickly between the wickets for two runs. However, it was Tariq’s actions that didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

Surprisingly, the match officials did not declare the ball a no-ball, sparking outrage on social media. According to the rules, the bowler’s arm can bend slightly, up to 15 degrees, while bowling.

Well, clips of Usman Tariq’s bowling style went viral on social media, with fans accusing him of “chucking” and demanding action from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Many fans have expressed surprise and raised questions as to how such actions can be allowed in international cricket. The internet has been flooded with memes, harsh comments and comparisons, with some even dubbing him “Pakistan’s new Bhatta bowler”.

Usman Tariq’s previous bowling action controversy

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Usman Tariq’s actions have come under scrutiny. Earlier in March 2024, Tariq was reported for suspicious bowling action in just three matches of Pakistan Super League (PSL).

However, after detailed review and testing at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, the Pakistani spinner was cleared by experts just five days later and allowed to continue bowling in the tournament. Tariq later explained that his unusual action was a natural part of his bowling rhythm.

Tariq had told MYK Sports, “I have two elbows in my arm. My arm bends naturally. I have got it tested and it has been cleared. Everyone thinks I bend my arms and all that. My bent arm is a biological issue.”

Shaheen Afridi’s flamboyant spell and Babar Azam’s masterclass lead Pakistan to T20I series win

Well, Babar Azam once again proved why he is Pakistan’s biggest match-winner as he led his team to a thrilling T20 series win over South Africa. Babar played a brilliant inning of 68 runs on 47 balls, helping Pakistan achieve the target of 140 runs with six balls to spare and win the final T20 match by four wickets.

Captain Salman Ali Aga also contributed 33 runs in Lahore. Earlier, Shaheen Afridi set the tone with a powerful opening spell, striking twice in the very first over and taking three wickets in total.

Their early successes left South Africa struggling, as they could only muster 139 runs on the board.

With this win, Pakistan won the T20I series 2–1 after a 1–1 draw in the Test series. Now, they will be seen in action in the three-match ODI series starting from November 4.
