The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi, announced that they will boycott their match against arch-rivals India during the T20 World Cup 2026. Many questioned whether this decision was made to avoid playing India rather than to support Bangladesh, who was removed from the event.
The ICC has reacted to Pakistan’s decision to boycott the T20 World Cup match against India in Colombo. Notably, the ICC clarified through an official statement that it has not yet received formal confirmation of the move from the Pakistan Cricket Board and said that it is still awaiting an official response.
Gautam Gambhir’s fear of India behind Pakistan’s decision?
Pakistan’s claim of showing solidarity with Bangladesh has raised more questions than answers. Many believe that the real concern is with Gautam Gambhir’s Indian team, which has developed a much more aggressive identity under his leadership.
Since becoming the head coach, Gambhir has pioneered a fearless brand of cricket in which India attack from the very first ball. This approach has troubled Pakistan in the past, and the current Indian team is very different from the teams they once competed against.
Some believe that quitting the competition will help the Pakistan Cricket Board avoid causing another heavy defeat to Gambhir-led India on home soil. The Men in Green suffered three defeats against India in the Asia Cup 2025, including the final.

Pakistan’s only win against India in the T20 World Cup came in 2021. In Melbourne in 2022, Virat Kohli played a memorable innings to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. India then defended just 119 runs in New York in 2024, restricting Pakistan from chasing the run-a-ball target.
India’s recent dominance over Pakistan in the Asia Cup has further widened the distance between the two teams. Now facing this Indian team often feels like facing history that keeps repeating itself.
India has a clear lead over Pakistan in squad strength.
India have picked a strong and balanced team, full of match-winners in every department. Openers like Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan provide fast starts, while the middle order looks strong with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
Jasprit Bumrah, often regarded as one of the best T20 bowlers of all time, will lead the bowling unit with support from Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy. This combination gives India control in both the powerplay and death overs.
In contrast, Pakistan rely heavily on individual talent rather than collective team performance. Their pace attack, once their biggest strength, has struggled on flat pitches, while the spin department has failed to deliver consistent success.
It will require something extraordinary to face this Indian side. Many believe that the Pakistan Cricket Board decided on the boycott not for political reasons, but to avoid a potentially heavy defeat against a dominant Indian team.
