Pakistan announces major ODI tri-series with England and Sri Lanka with big win

Ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, Pakistan are likely to play against Sri Lanka and England in a triangular ODI series as part of their preparations for the ICC’s flagship tournament. It is reported that the cricket boards of all three formats are discussing to decide the dates and venue for the three-team tournament.

As of now, it has been confirmed that Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England will play in the ODI tri-nation series, but when and where is yet to be officially confirmed. According to media reports, the competition can be organized in October-November this year.

ODI tri-series will be part of preparations for the 2027 World Cup

The ODI World Cup will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November 2027. Of these three teams, Pakistan and England performed promisingly in the format. England last played an ODI series against New Zealand, where it lost 0-3.

Three Lions won the ODI series against Sri Lanka 2-1. Pakistan achieved a big win in the ODI series against the powerful South Africa cricket team. Against South Africa, they won the bilateral series 2–1 and defeated Sri Lanka 3–0 in the 2025–26 season.

But, just days after the T20 World Cup 2026 final, against Bangladesh, the Men in Green suffered an unexpected series defeat in an away tournament. Sri Lanka is not in good form in ODIs as they lost to Pakistan and lost 1-2 against England.

Dates and venues yet to be announced

The triangular ODI series is likely to be organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a very limited number of grounds.

“The PCB is likely to hold the matches in only two venues, Lahore and Karachi, but the dates and venues will be finalized soon,” a source close to the development told The Pioneer.

Apart from the ODI competition, the Sri Lankan team may also play a three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series during the tour before the triangular tournament. According to media reports, they will play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and a two-match Test series, which will be part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.

Earlier in 2025, Pakistan played a triangular series on home soil with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe as the other participants. On their home ground, Pakistan clinched the series by defeating Sri Lanka in the final in Rawalpindi on 29 November.
