The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly faced embarrassment after a press release regarding Pakistan’s T20 World Cup travel plans was leaked online. The PCB later removed the release and reposted it with the lead paragraph removed, but several Pakistani journalists also shared the issue on social media platforms.

Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup remains unclear even though the team is scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka on Monday, February 2. According to reports, the Pakistan team may fly to Colombo on an Air Lanka flight which may also take Australia. PCB has maintained its stance showing solidarity with Bangladesh.

Uncertainty continues over Pakistan’s T20 World Cup stance

According to a report by RevSportz, there is still uncertainty over Pakistan’s final status due to the lack of clear official confirmation. This has increased tension between India and Sri Lanka ahead of the tournament starting on February 7.

Mohsin Naqvi and the Pakistan Cricket Board are struggling to separate the political message from cricketing decisions. Pakistan’s stance has received little support in International Cricket Council circles, leaving the PCB largely isolated.

Pakistan seems to be connecting with the concerns of Bangladesh. However, the report warned that any tensions, such as refusing to play matches, could bring Pakistan into direct conflict with the ICC rather than strengthening its position.

Questions raised on continuity in Pakistan’s stance

Questions have been raised on the continuity of Pakistan’s stand. Many are asking whether this designation only applies to one opponent or whether it will also apply to big games, such as a semi-final or final against India.

The issue has also come into focus with the Under-19 World Cup match between India and Pakistan to be held in Zimbabwe on February 1, a must-win match for the Men in Green.

Pakistan may face sanctions, financial losses, strained relations and a growing image of instability within international cricket.

Meanwhile, India has kept its focus on the field. As team discussions continue regarding the balance of the top order and playing XI, preparations are progressing peacefully in the final days before the tournament.

Bangladesh is out, Pakistan’s decision on T20 World Cup is still pending

The ICC removed Bangladesh from the tournament after the BCB asked them to move their matches from India to Sri Lanka due to security concerns. Notably, the ICC rejected the request but granted assurances after an independent security review. However, Bangladesh refused to play in India.

After Bangladesh’s exit, Mohsin Naqvi met Shahbaz Sharif and said that the final decision on Pakistan’s participation would be taken by Monday. If Pakistan qualifies, it is expected that it will play all its matches, including the knockout games, only in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the ICC had agreed that all India-Pakistan matches in ICC events will be held at neutral venues till 2027. The deal was aimed at avoiding political and logistical issues and ensuring a smooth schedule of global tournaments.
